Geographically, Branistea village is situated in the Transylvanian Plateau, between the hills of Bistrita and Unguras, on the left side of the river Somesul Mare – downstream of its confluence with the river Sieu.
The terrain is flat with a slight slope in the North towards the Somesul Mare River.
The village is situated in the Somesul Mare meadow and crossed by the Malut valley.

 Analysis: Romania: Waste Spill - Feb 2000, The Baia Mare Gold Mine Cyanide Spill: Causes, Impacts and Liability
On January 30th 2000, the dam containing toxic waste material from the Baia Mare Aurul gold mine in North Western Romania burst and released 100,000 cubic meters of waste water, heavily contaminated with cyanide, into the Lapus and Somes tributaries of the river Tisza, one of the biggest in Hungary.
Local inhabitants of the mines are also often affected by the industry and have been evicted from their land or affected by the pollution that results from the mining process.
The Avicola Pui Carne SA, Avimar SA and Avistar SA poultry processing combines near Baia Mare caused a major fish kill in the Lapus in July 1999, as did the negligence of the pig-breeding farm in Bontida in January 2000 in Cluj-Napoca on the Crisul-Mic (Kis-Szamos).

The Somesul Mic River is 178-km long, has a reception area of 3773 km2 and flows (in canalized regime) through Cluj-Napoca City; it is named as Somesul Cald River up to the confluence with the Somesul Rece River in the Gilau Reservoir.

The north-eastern part of the county is drained by the Somesul Mare river on a length of approximately 6 km.
Annual average temperatures range from 1.5oC and 2.5oC up on the peaks of Vladeasa and Muntele Mare to 3-6oC at the brink of the high altitude zone and 7-9oC in the Transylvanian Plain and the Somesan Plateau.

The foundation of the Somes Site Group, head-office in Tarnita – Cluj on January 1, 1970 was determined by the approval of the investment “The Hydropower Development Somesul Cald” in the upper basin.
Subsequently, the development of Somesul Cald and of Somesul Mic respectively continued downstream with other works, by performing between 1979-1987 on this section up to Cluj, 5 hydropower nodes, including the development of the river bed along about 25 km.
Between 1979 and 1982 the HPP Astileu II on Crisul Repede and Calinesti Oas on river Tur – Satu Mare were performed.

In the east Rodna is separated from Muntii Tibles by the Pasul Setref (818m) pass, in the west from Muntii Suhardului by Pasul Rotunda (1271m) pass and in the northeast from Maramures by Pasul Prislop (1416m) pass.
The south border is valley of Somesul Mare, which separates Rodna from Muntii Birgau, southwest border is valley of Salauta river and north border valley of Viseu river.
Lala Mare (1815m) is the biggest one with area 0.56ha and 1.6m deep.

Arriving from Romania on February 2nd, the toxins practically eradicated life in Tisza River.
On January 30th, 2000 a dam of a tailing lagoon at a gold mine near Baia Mare, north-western Romania broke and washed 100.000 m3 stored waste water down the Szamos (Somesul) river.
The waste water, highly contaminated with cyanides and heavy metals, arrived at the Hungarian border on February 2nd.
