Something Else By The Kinks is an album by the British rock group The Kinks, released in December 1967.
The album is unusual in the Kinks' catalogue from this period for the inclusion of three songs composed by guitarist Dave Davies, including the excellent solo hit single "Death of a Clown".
Something Else also sold poorly in the US upon release in January 1968, as did its predecessor, Face to Face.

The Kinks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
At the conclusion of their summer 1965 American tour, the Kinks were banned from re-entering the United States by the American Federation of Musicians Union, after ugly conflicts with the American tour promoters over money and performance venues.
For four years, the Kinks were prohibited from returning to the U.S., which not only meant that the group was deprived of the world's largest music market, but that they were effectively cut off from the musical and social upheavals of the late 60s.
Particularly Blur frontman Damon Albarn and Oasis' chief songwriter Noel Gallagher both have stressed that the Kinks are one of the bands that made biggest impact on their songwriting as well as their developing as artists and musicians and respective bands' careers.

Despite the Kinks' tremendous musical growth, their chart performance was beginning to stagnate as the tastes of the pop world began to change.

The Kinks are a British rock group, who first gained prominence in the mid-1960's and became one of the most influential groups of British rock and the "British Invasion" of America, as well as being credited as founding fathers of the heavy metal genre.
Something Else sold poorly (in part because it was released on the heels of a budget-priced Kinks greatest hits album), and the Kinks rushed out a new single, "Autumn Almanac," which became another big U.K. hit for the group.
The Kinks' early shows after the return to the US were held in small venues (such as the Fillmore East, and local colleges and small clubs), and were highly undisciplined, as the group had to adapt to the changes.

Released in 1967, Something Else showed the Kinks moving away from R and B cover versions surrounding one or two hit singles to a greater maturity in the songwriting of Ray Davies.
However, Something Else boasted what is widely regarded as the group's greatest song and number two single Waterloo Sunset.
The Kinks were known for their arguments and on-stage fights and Dave Davies uses Death of a Clown to have a "dig" at his older brother.

Still, I think that even foregoing my obvious bias, ”Something Else By The Kinks” should be counted amongst the greatest albums of all time (although, of course, only my bias matters- personal passion is, after all, the only way of measuring the greatness of a record).
The Kinks had already emancipated themselves from Garage Rock stalwarts to Neo-Dandys via ”Face To Face”, but it was ”Something Else...” that left no doubt that the change had truly been worthwhile, despite what certain boring three chord fascists might say.
When the characters on this record fall into disgrace, it is usually because they were somehow fixated on someone else- be it the jealous sibling of “Two Sisters”, the dreaming schoolboy of “David Watts” or the helpless son-in-law of “Situation Vacant”.

Yes, the Kinks were phenomenal; they just had a nasty history of doing the right things at the wrong time, and just as often doing the wrong things at the right time.
Problem is, the Kinks just didn't have the Animals' chops or the Animals' self-assuredness or even anything vaguely approaching the Animals' stunning image: the Kinks were just one of the hundreds of average British rock bands that accidentally happened to fall upon a new, rich, innovative sound.
That said, what with all the progress, the Kinks were still standing with one foot firmly jammed in the past, and the better they get at their new style, the blander they look when doing the "old" stuff.

Something Else is a good album; I wouldn't call it a boring album, exactly, though it is a music-hall album through and through.
The Kinks have MANY great albums, and made great songs as late as 1976 (I personally adore the "Soap Opera" album), but this one has the highest number of A+ tracks, and also the greatest stylistic variety.

Some fans argue that this 1967 release is one of head Kink Ray Davies's middle-period masterpieces (coming between two LPs that no kultist can deny: Face to Face and Village Green Preservation Society), while others regard it as an uneven collection of great singles and inconsequential filler; a stopgap move.
Although no one could argue that it's as consistent as those classics, Something Else does boast one of the great one-two punches in rock history: the rumbling tale of social envy, "David Watts," and "Death of a Clown," a slurring pub sing-along warbled by brother Dave.
Anyway, maybe the Kinks are too English for you or something, but I don't see how you can praise the Beatles and then not be steamrolled by the Kinks melodies or musical genius.

The result was an eccentric brand of rock and roll that had far more to do with Thomas Hardy than Chuck Berry, and Something Else (the very title a sly rebuke to the hip orthodoxy of the times) represents its richest expression.
The album has the integrity of a collection of short stories or dramatic vignettes (for better and worse, that theatrical element would be an important aspect of the Kinks' subsequent work).
By the time of Something Else, the Kinks (guitarists Ray and Dave Davies, bassist Peter Quaife, drummer Mick Avory) had moved away from the raw, raucous and hugely influential guitar-driven sound of their early hits, like "You Really Got Me." The arrangements are quieter and occasionally employ keyboards and strings.
