Bright Eyes : Oh Holy Fools: The Music of Son, Ambulance and Bright Eyes - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
For his second split release with fellow Omaha songwriter Joe Knapp (recording as Son, Ambulance), Bright Eyes mastermind Conor Oberst and his rotating crew of talented musicians proudly offer up four striking new originals.
Contributing the same number of tracks, Son, Ambulance introduces a unique musical perspective as Knapp's jerky guitar and piano-based compositions float along with his lazy high-range vocals, producing a sound akin to more upbeat Belle & Sebastian recordings.
Bright Eyes' contributions are equally engaging, and again prove that a penchant for a bit of melodrama can be overlooked in the company of startling and confessional lyric writing.

Treble: Son, Ambulance - Key   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Son, Ambulance is the vehicle for the songwriting of Joe Knapp, who applied the moniker to his solo work starting with Oh Holy Fools, a split with Bright Eyes.
Son, Ambulance is, by far, the most piano-centric Saddle Creek band, which immediately sets them apart from the rocking Cursive, the alt-country leanings of Bright Eyes or the electro new wave of The Faint.
Son, Ambulance may not be as well-established as some of their Saddle Creek peers.

Perhaps the comparisons pushed Son, Ambulance to work a little harder to establish their own unique voice.
Because that is exactly what Joe Knapp (the man driving the Ambulance) and his assembled band of helpers have done on Key.
Give Son, Ambulance a listen - you just might find that they deserve a place right up there with the other, better known Saddle Creek bands.

DOA - Son, Ambulance, Bright Eyes - Oh Holy Fools
"Brown Park" from Son, Ambulance has a decidedly Elvis Costello feel to it, at least in the heavy use of some wonderful piano, and the song does have something of a 70's feel to it, but Koster's vocals lend a more modern and personal feel to this song.
I'd say "The Invention of Beauty" by Son, Ambulance actually has a bit of a Belle and Sebastian feel to it, lead by crisp acoustic guitar and synthesizers for a softer poppy feel.
Son, Ambulance, similarly, contributes quieter and more sparse songs in addition to very full and complex, lengthy pop songs.

The name "Son, Ambulance" is a creative play on words referring to the word somnambulism, which means to sleepwalk.
Although, there is nothing sleepy about Son, Ambulance's music it makes sense that Joe Knapp's solo project would be as creatively named as his imaginative new LP, Euphemystic.
Last year Son, Ambulance made their official debut on the split EP Oh, Holy Fools which featured music from both Knapp and Oberst.

The album opens with the voice of Knapp's son on an answering machine message; his voice soon disappears within jarring noise.
It's a trip within the mind of someone who is nervous, lonely, and lost, who longs for human connection.
Son, Ambulance for some reason seem to get almost uniformly dismissive reviews, or perhaps I'm just reading the wrong publications.

As to where the previously mentioned bands have managed to conquer their individual genres (math rock, 80’s new wave, heart felt acoustic rock) Son, Ambulance seems to be struggling some what to try and figure out what their sound is exactly.
Son, Ambulance is trying its damnedest to distinguish themselves.
Somewhere in-between singing the theme song to Sesame Street and attempts at 70’s soft rock there is a glimmer of Son, Ambulance’s true potential.

Son, Ambulance: Key: Pitchfork Record Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Son, Ambulance first appeared on Oh Holy Fools, a split EP with Bright Eyes on which Knapp's ramshackle confections easily outshone Oberst's meandering emoting.
Son, Ambulance's debut LP, Euphemystic, and Oberst's work through Fevers and Mirrors shared an amateurish basement charm-- imperfections were left intact; the compositions seemed intuitive and untrained.
Usually, stylistic revision takes place visibly and incrementally, but Son, Ambulance's new brew fermented in the silence between their debut and this sophomore release, and it's jarring when the man who once covered the "Sesame Street" theme song suddenly tries his hand at "mature" songwriting.

As rare as perfectionism is in new acts, it’s the sole purpose Son, Ambulance took so long to establish itself in any form.
As songwriter for Son, Ambulance, Knapp shows the sort of veneration for lyrics that’s common in the singer/songwriter style his band dabbles in, though Knapp’s formative years as a songwriter were marked by a much larger respect for well written lyrics.
Eventually the idea of laying a proper band would emerge, and Son, Ambulance was born; Landon Hedges would step up to play bass in the trio.

The result: The songs are fully realized, any boundary between band and singer/songwriter is seamlessly blended, and a bricolage of youthfully euphoric pop songs and triumphant eight-minute blasts of majesty sure to infect all is formed.
Son, Ambulances newest full-length, Key, follows an impressive debut (the Oh, Holy Fools split with Bright Eyes) and 2001s Euphemystic.
The eclectic style of Son, Ambulance has the underlying vibe of classic pop songwriters like Elvis Costello and Jackson Browne, all while taking the listener to the other side of town, the other side of the world, never-never land, and everywhere in between.

If Folds' voice were a portrait, then Son, Ambulance would be one of those guys who sits in a museum every day for weeks painting a near-exact replica.
Ironically, the more Son, Ambulance emphasizes the piano, the more it sounds like (to further beat a dead horse) Ben Folds outtakes.
Son, Ambulance follow their Saddle Creek debut-- the playfully dilettantish Euphemystic-- with a more mature and assured effort.

It seems that if any of their group of buds can pen a song, they will book them studio time, throw in a bunch of different instruments to beef it up, package it and sell it.
Notice I had to add “lite” because Son, Ambulance is not as good or as powerful as any of those bands.
However, there are some worthy tracks that would be left after fat-trimming, styles perhaps the band should stick to for more success in the future.

This split CD, Oh Holy Fools, does have such a song, which makes it a must for anyone so deeply affected by this wilting flower of a flutter-voiced singer-songwriter.
Oh Holy Fools is the second split CD featuring Oberst's Bright Eyes and his roommate Joe Knapp's Son, Ambulance (formerly Ambulance).
This being the second split record between the two bands, it's painfully obvious what they and Saddle Creek are trying to do here--trick Bright Eyes fans into following Son, Ambulance--but such tricks are worthless when the coattail rider is of so little talent.

With playful, meandering melodies, thoughtful lyrics, and a vocal style that's somewhere between bedroom-gentle and summer-afternoon-sunny, Joe Knapp (the singing and songwriting force behind Son, Ambulance) makes honest music that both calms and inspires.
Son, Ambulance exploded onto the scene earlier this year by appearing opposite Bright Eyes on the split release Oh Holy Fools--The Music of Son, Ambulance and Bright Eyes.
This eclectic songwriting style shows many influences, but the subtle underlying vibe of a '70s piano man songwriter prevails on the multi-layered keyboard-driven tracks, as well as the stripped-down voice and piano songs.

Review - Son, Ambulance/Bright Eyes: Oh Holy Fools   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
I never realized how tragically romantic Nebraska was as a subject until I heard Conor Oberst/Bright Eyes perform about a year ago, although I had noticed, when I was much younger, that talking about growing up in Nebraska to strange men in California was a sure way to get free drinks/laid.
This is not to say that all the songs on this split LP-half Son, Ambulance and half Bright Eyes-are necessarily about Nebraska, but there's something about the melancholic delivery and particular references to playgrounds, winter, and the determination to cling to a childlike innocence that are inherently Midwestern, if not inherently Nebraskan.
The two bands work off each other well, alternating tracks between them, and while there are plenty of similarities between the two, such as slow-paced, melancholic delivery, near-acoustic instrumentation, etc., there are enough striking differences between the two that there's no confusing which song is from which.

But if you should ever feel like you're forgetting, there is a remedy: Oh Holy Fools: The Music of Son, Ambulance and Bright Eyes.
Son, Ambulance sounds like a naked Belle and Sebastian; Joe Knapp, the singer/songwriter, sounds exactly Stuart David, but the music lacks all the layered orchestration.
Which makes perfect, quiet interludes between four new songs from Conor Oberst, the very not-old singer/songwriter behind Bright Eyes.

All I knew about Son, Ambulance before this CD showed up was that they were on Saddle Creek and therefore probably listed Bright Eyes as one of their major influences.
Then I did some digging and found out that indeed Joe Knapp, the songwriting brains behind Son, Ambulance, not only is influenced by Conor Oberst, but he used to live with him.
So accordingly, this album could very well say Bright Eyes on the cover and only the most indie of nerds would notice.
