Music Genre: Son - Music of Puerto Rico
Son is the music of the Spanish colonists, using traditional Spanish instruments like the tres and maracas, fused with the sounds of slavery -- the instruments, rhythms and beats of Africa.
The son is a music genre especially for dance and originated in the Sierra Maestra mountains of eastern Cuba, during the last century.
The son genre is defined by three main elements: sensual lyrics and street wisdom; complex, infectious rhythmic structures with various percussion instruments including bongos, maracas, and claves; and lastly, harmony that is achieved by the tres and the guitar.

 MRP Music Group's Latin 101
Son developed in the late 1800’s in the mountainous Oriente province, located in the eastern regions of Cuba.
Son began as an Afro-Cuban popular dance of the rural working classes and was performed with percussion alone. Son is believed to be the first musical genre to use drums played with bare hands.
This was distinguished from guitar music intended primarily for dancing such as the Cuban son or guaracha- although in later decades, as musicians began speeding up the rhythm and dancers developed a new dance step, bachata began to be considered dance music as well.

With roots on the island of Cuba, Son is a style of music that became popular in the second half of the 19th century in the eastern province of Oriente.
Son is derived from Spanish, African, French Creole and native musical influences, arising first in Oriente province, reaching Havana around the 1880s.
Son, mambo and rumba, along with other forms of Latin music contributed to the development of salsa music, which quickly became perhaps the most popular form of Latin music ever.

Son instrumentation combines the 3 timbral elements of metal, skin and wood, layered within four distinct rhythmic planes. The principal rhythmic element is the pattern of the clave (2 hardwoodsticks struck together in a rhythm of 3 long and 2 short beats) which creates the repeated 2 bar time line around which all the instruments play.
The importance of the clave in son music cannot be overstated.
The lyrics of son derive from the guajiro speech and parla or jerga (the broken pronounciation of Spanish and nasal accent of the first afro-cubans), and is a reflection of country life in the monte as Cuba emerged as a nation after the war of independence from Spain and the freeing of the slaves.

This is not a surprising revelation as this wonderful music has been inaccesible to the general public of the United States since the late sixties, due to the unfortunate imposition of trade embargos and financial penalties for unapproved transactions with Cuba.
Son was developed at the turn of the 19th century by "guajiro's," or the common man from an eastern province of Cuba called the Oriente.
These, and other aspects of Cuban Son, qualify it as the folk music of Cuba, and beg the respect of listeners to view it in its own right, not thrown into the Salsa basket, which unfortunately is often the case.

Son House | Music Artist | Videos, News, Photos & Ringtones | MTV
Son House's place, not only in the history of Delta blues, but in the overall history of the music, is a very high one indeed.
Son was still playing (actually at the peak of his powers, some would say), but had backed off of it a bit since Charley Patton died in 1934.
He fell into ill health by the early '70s; what was later diagnosed as both Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease first affected his memory and his ability to recall songs on-stage and, later, his hands, which shook so bad he finally had to give up the guitar and eventually leave performing altogether by 1976.

It is due to the Son that the African instruments came to light to animate the orchestras that were prevalent and typical at the time in Havana.
There is evidence that suggests that the Son was born at the end of the nineteenth century in the mountains of the Oriente Provence and acquired its distinctive musical personality in Havana in the 1920s.
It should be noted that this Son was composed by Teodora Gines on her "bandola" in the region of Baracoa which coincides with the fact that the Son as we know it was born in Baracoa Oriente.

The Argentinean singer's artful approach to music may initially be off-putting to listeners who like their world music bright and bubbly, simple and shiny.
Molina's Son is relatively straightforward in its lyrical approach (love, life, loss), but her musicality is complex, confusing, and often wondrous.
Their primary role seems to be to create a broader than usual range of pitch bend, imparting a dangling / hovering / suspended sense to the uniformly major harmonies.
