Son River - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Son River of central India is the largest of the Ganges ' southern tributaries.
Geologically, the lower valley of the Son is an extension of the Narmada Valley, and the Kaimur Range an extension of the Vindhya Range.
The Son has a steep gradient (35-55 cm per km) with quick run-off and ephemeral regimes, becoming a roaring river with the rain-waters in the catchment area but turning quickly into a fordable stream.

 MSN Encarta - Ganges
At Allahābād, the Ganges is joined by the Yamuna River from the southwest, then flows east past the cities of Mirzāpur, Vārānasi, Patna, and Bhāgalpur near the Bangladesh border.
The main course of the river continues south and is joined by the Brahmaputra and then by the Meghna River (the name by which it is known thereafter) before entering the Bay of Bengal.
In Hindu ideology, bathing in the river is said to wash away one’s sins, and river water is used extensively in rituals.

Undermining the Son gharials: a report on the illegal sandmining in the Son gharial sanctuary
In 1981 the government of Madhya Pradesh declared specified lengths of the river Son and its tributaries, Gopad and Banas, as Son Gharial sanctuary, with the intention of protecting the river fauna, especially the crocodilians - gharial and mugger.
Gharials are river dwelling crocodililans inhabiting deep pools at river junctions and bends, called "kunds" or "dahas", and the deep gorges in hilly country.
Since the Son river enters Sidhi district from the South, flowing towards the North East, a large geographical area of the district comes in the sanctuary, thus affecting 108 villages.
