Classic-Horror Review of Son of Dracula (1943)
Son of Dracula's substance is an easy match for its style, incorporating ideas that wouldn't be repeated again for a number of years.
She is never portrayed as explicitly evil, and she becomes one of Hollywood's first true advocates for vampirism (both Bela Lugosi in Dracula '31 and Gloria Holden in Dracula's Daughter express a desire to divest themselves of the immortal coil).
If Son of Dracula suffers for anything (other than poor casting), it is the fact that the plot and character complexities reduce the potential for terror, and Siodmak never really compensates.

DRACULA: THE LEGACY COLLECTION - DVD
Dracula's standard two-channel mono mix is scratchy and unremarkable, and its video transfer is a little soft in certain areas while demonstrating a level of grain consistent with the age of the negative.
Compare Dracula's first emergence from his coffin in both versions: the one is all of the poetry of the symphony of the night; the other is really well lit and choreographed.
Dracula's Daughter's relative squeamishness, even by 1930s standards, owes to the pressure of conservative groups demanding that Universal tone down the grue--the irony of that and most teetotaller crusades being, of course, that from the rubble of bad thinking and political correctness rises one of the more disturbing--and effective--entries in the classic horror pantheon.

Returning to the ancestral castle 25 years after the death of the monster, the son of Dr. Frankenstein (Basil Rathbone) meets Ygor (Bela Lugosi), a mad shepherd who is hiding the comatose creature.
Apparently the whole “children of” milieu was the most successful of the horror sequels; Dracula’s Daughter and Son of Dracula were erratic but better than average for the genre, and these two Frankenstein movies offered some of the best material found in the field.
Son of Frankenstein appears in an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 on this single-sided, double-layered DVD; due to those dimensions, the image has not been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.

Dracula's Daughter is the direct sequel to the 1931 classic although it did not appear until 1936.
Dracula's Daughter presents us with the interesting proposition of Dracula's vampiric daughter longing to be freed of the curse that afflicts her.
Son of Dracula, on the other hand, leaves the viewer with a sense of disappointment and disdain (which only manifests itself when the viewer actually awakens from the sleep-inducing stupor of the whole experience).

Dracula is Stoker's tale of the immortal count, the 'undead', a creature who prolongs his life-after-death by feeding on the blood of the living.
Dracula is prosaic by today's standards: slow moving and cryptic, and belying far too much of its literary and stage roots: whole sections of the book (particularly in Renfield's dialogue) are delivered word-for-word.
However, Dracula remains a landmark: a star-making vehicle for Bela Lugosi (though it was also a curse: he would never be able to shake the role), and the beginning of Universal's horror cycle (at least in talkies).

Both films are worth seeing, with "Son of Dracula" a standout, with an unusually strong story, plentiful effects, a fast pace and a surprisingly bleak ending.

Dracula's Daughter, completed on Friday the 13th in March 1936, is not merely a sequel as we're used to them today — it's a direct continuation of Dracula that furthers the story, even down to the disposal of the Count's body by the title villainess.
Dracula's daughter was conceived as nothing less than a 1930s dominatrix with a dungeon full of appropriate gadgetry, seen at one point keeping Dracula's three vampire brides in line with a whip!
Today, beyond the aficionados, Dracula's Daughter is best known for an effective scene wherein the Countess, operating from her artist's flat in Chelsea and stalking the fogbound streets wearing a fl hooded cloak and hypnotic ring, victimizes a pretty young street girl, a scene cited for its suggestion of lesbian overtones.

Son of Dracula is an American horror film released in 1943.
Despite the title, the film leaves it ambiguous as to whether Alucard is the original Dracula or the character's son.
Although the movie is often considered a sequel to the 1931 film, in it, Dracula is described as having been destroyed in the 19th century, when the original novel was set but not the earlier film.

Starr and Nilsson were longtime friends, and Starr had played drums on Son of Schmilsson, which had spoofed horror movie motifs.
