The egg hatches into a baby Godzilla (called "Minya"), which the mantises attack ruthlessly until Godzilla himself is drawn from the sea to save his child (though a mother is nowhere to be seen!).
Godzilla teaches his new son how to fight, showing him how to spit fire (the baby boy can only emit smoke rings at first), and leading him to fight his own battles — though always on hand to take over when the little boy is overpowered.
Son of Godzilla is a disappointingly silly entry, from which the series would fortunately bounce back (though not until after Godzilla's Revenge).

That film, SON OF GODZILLA, is solely aimed at the juvenile audience, and adults with any sense of logic and credibility will immediately dismiss the film as being totally ridiculous.
To his credit, kids will no doubt enjoy Fukuda’s SON OF GODZILLA because it features a young “Godzilla” who learns how to be a monster: how to roar, breathe fire, and generally be threatening from his dad in some of the most ridiculous scenes ever related to the camera.
After teaching his son how to be a good giant reptile, Godzilla seems more interested in napping than protecting Minya from the giant insects on the island, and often lets Minya wonder around wherever he wants to go.

Son of Godzilla was the second of two consecutive films (the other was 1966's Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster) directed by Jun Fukuda, with music by Masaru Sato (Yojimbo), and special effects more or less helmed in both films by Sadamasa Arikawa.
Son of Godzilla looks equally fine, and that's especially gratifying as this was never released theatrically at all in the U.S., and except for some illegal bootleg tapes and pricey Japanese DVDs and laserdiscs, has never been available in widescreen format.
Son of Godzilla is a fun movie, perfect family entertainment, and representative of the classic series at its most goofily charming.

Godzilla and hid tyke sidekick then have to contend with a giant web-spewing spider, and the film’s plot prompts a massive snowstorm on the island, causing our reptilian friends to hibernate before their subsequent adventure.
With SON OF GODZILLA, the series took a definite turn in the juvenile direction, with the mush-faced, peculiar-shaped Minya being the center of a lot of goofiness.
SON OF GODZILLA truly holds up as a fun, colorful monster/action film, and it’s great Saturday afternoon entertainment for the whole family.

Godzilla looks nothing like he did in the previous movies, he looks deformed and looks as though someone was really making and effort to make him look phony.
Minya (Godzilla's son) is only entertaining to 5 year olds and the Godzilla suit is way too big for the actor to fit into...
Unlike the Godzilla film, this one is just for the real little tikes (this was around the time where Godzilla was falling into Gamera's habits...

When Godzilla appears on the scene later in the movie, he had been mutated years after the original timeline by coming into contact with a sunken nuclear submarine.

The scene where Godzilla rises from the ocean was done by having actor Haruo Nakajima ride on a cart on a rail submerged in a five foot deep pool while being pulled by a truck.

Son of Godzilla's video presentation is, more or less, amazing.
The subtitles are a loose interpretation of the actual lines sometimes, and there is a slight delay in when the subtitles appear on screen vs. when the actor speaks the lines, but overall I guess one can just be thankful that they didn't opt to simply subtitle the dubbed track.

This was the first Godzilla movie I ever saw and as a result, this is one of my all-time favorites.
Godzilla and his son (who looks more like the Pilsbury Dough Boy then the son of Godzilla) take on a giant spider and some other big praying mantis creatures but eventually are defeated by harsh weather conditions.

Comic relief comes in the form of watching Son of Godzilla crawl around and fall over while Godzilla tries to teach him out to shoot fire.

By this point all serious threat that Godzilla had once maintained was gone and the series was well on its way towards being little more than a juvenile punchup between guys in rubber suits.
The film with its body-slamming of giant insects and games of hockey played with rocks between the mantises’ crab pincers, not to mention the jaunty carnival music that accompanies the young Godzilla every time he appears on screen, signal that this is hardly a serious entry in the series.
Despite a certain awkwardness of movement and the odd visible wire on the insects, the effects are quite decent - the glowing stipple eyes of the mantises are somewhat unworldly and the moment when the giant mantis takes to the air is good.
