Piano Sonata No. 8 (Beethoven) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In this particular sonata, the rondo has the tempo marking of adagio and it is the second movement of the sonata.
It is possible that the "Pathétique" sonata was inspired by an earlier work of Mozart, his piano sonata K. Mozart's work is likewise in C minor, has three movements in roughly the same character as Beethoven's, and in the first movement includes menacing rolling octaves for the left hand.
As the sonata is one of the more famous of Beethoven's works, it has not surprisingly been incorporated from time to time into works of popular culture.

BBC - Radio 3 - Beethoven Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13 (Pathétique)
This Sonata represents one of the few cases in which the popular title came from the composer himself - its full name is 'Grande sonate pathétique' (pathetic in the sense of 'suffering', rather than the English sense of 'pitiful').
The dramatic Grave introduction to the Pathétique is the most powerful opening to any of his sonatas to this date and its music becomes an intrinsic part of the movement through its reappearances at the beginning of the development and coda.
The Sonata ends with a straightforward rondo that, despite its minor key, only recaptures the general character of the rest of the work in the sforzando chords of the coda, the remainder being more delicate and even humorous.

According to Sisman’s criteria for the “pathetic style,” which she explores in relation to this specific sonata, it is entirely feasible that Beethoven’s decision to cast the finale movement in “sonata-rondo” form was influenced by the resemblances of this form to conventions for a first movement of a sonata.
The choice of Ab major to conclude the movement and the sonata by, although most obviously related to the Adagio cantabile movement of the sonata, also forces the Db upper chromatic neighbor to C in the melody as it iterates the “prime motive” and the “prime motive in inversion” in the Ab major tonal region.
The sonata that begins in C minor at a forte marking concludes by a tranquillo e semplice recapitulation of all the materials of sorrow with which Beethoven sparred throughout the sonata in an integral unity in Ab major.

The finale, whose sketches suggest that it was conceived for some other kind of work, possibly a violin sonata, returns to C minor, but not to the thunderous moods and dramatic gestures of the first movement.
At the same time it is full of adventure, and Beethoven’s sweet dismemberment of the main theme in the coda produces mysteries of the kind we associate with the music of his last years.

Sonata #14 "Moonlight" in C Sharp minor, Op.
Her way of dealing with this problem was typically idiosyncratic: she recorded only in short takes, repeating them many times in a search for expressive precision (rather than technical perfection), and reluctantly allowing them to be spliced together - though you'd never know it from the seamless flow of the music on these discs.
They were commissioned by Hungaroton following a series of concerts in 1976/77 in which she played all the sonatas, and she continued to work on them until the end of her life.

This integration of materials is further emphasized by the partial statement of the slow introduction in its original tempo at the beginning of the development section and then again to start the coda, the latter of which closes the movement with the same fury—and with the same material—of the first fast theme.
The final movement of most sonatas in the classical style is light and fast, lacking the power and drama of first movement, the lyrical beauty or weighty nobility of the slow movement, or, when present, the elegance and balance of the minuet.
However, in this sonata he conformed to the classical convention: the concluding rondo (there is no minuet or scherzo) is the least profound of the movements, although it is cast in the minor.

The nickname given to this sonata, “Pathetique”, definitely refers to the earlier connotations of the word.
Immediately from this section, we can hear whence the “pathetique” character of the sonata is derived; that is, the heavily emotional and sorrow-filled atmosphere that is created.
Beethoven’s first cello sonata, along with a second in G minor, were written in 1796 and dedicated to King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia, who was an able cellist.

On the other hand, one could ask oneself the question as to whether the 'Pathetique' was written during the period that lay between Beethoven's use of the first and second sketchbook, or even during all of this time, whereby he might not have included these sketches in either of the two sketchbooks.
It is the most dynamically propulsive of Beethoven's piano sonatas thus far, the first sonata to utilize a slow, dramatic introduction, and the first whose movements are clearly and unmistakably linked though the use of related thematic material and conscious reminiscences.
However, infers Kaiser, since the Pathetique is already as extrovert as it is, doubly-forceful interpretations also double the effect of our being tired of it, all the while their intention was to work against this.

Amazon.com: Beethoven: Piano Sonatas Nos. 8, 14, 21 & 23 / Wilhem Kempff: Music   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
His renditions of the Pathetique and Moonlight sonatas are exquisite, justly famous, and perfectly suited to his approach to Beethoven.
His playing of the sonatas was much more "introverted" than that of most other pianists; he always brought out the personal, introspective qualities of Beethoven, even in brilliant, heroic works like the Waldstein or the Appassionata.
Kempff's strengths are, in my opinion, better suited to the Haydenesque early sonatas and to the clarity and profundity of the late sonatas than to the early-middle to middle piano sonatas played here, which call for a more fiery temperament and style of playing than Kempff's admirably clear, lucid approach.

Take, for example, this tuba-and-piano arrangement of the slow movement from Beethoven's Piano Sonata in C minor Op.13: there's a real need for lesson- and examination-music for the tuba - yet the market is so small that it's hardly worth a publisher getting involved.
Vern Pat Nelson, on the other hand, can step into the breach with something which doesn't cost the earth to produce; nicely tests the tubist's ability to phrase meaningfully while sustaining a slow and wide-ranging legato line in collaboration with a piano; and happens to be by Beethoven as well...

It couples two of Beethoven's greatest piano sonatas, the Pathetique and Appassionata, with some charming bagatelles, and the underrated Choral Fantasy.
The Pathetique is a studio version from the 50s in mono sound (if you need a reference the whole disc is mono but sounds slightly clearer than Gould's famous 1955 Goldberg Variations), and it is simply the best performance of this famous sonata that I've ever heard.
