It was the manuscript of this sonata that Beethoven was clutching as he fled Gratz castle in 1806 during a storm after a row with Prince Lichnowsky - the water stains are still clearly visible on the manuscript which is in the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris.
This sonata which opened the gateway to the late sonatas was written in 1814 and is another intimate 2 movement work - the first in the minor and the 2nd in the major key, a scheme Beethoven was to exploit to the full in his last sonata.
This monumental sonata, completed in 1818 and sketched around the same time as the 9th Symphony (though that work was not completed until 1824) expands the four movement plan to epic proportions.

Sonata (music) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The sonata da chiesa, generally for one or more violins and bass, consisted normally of a slow introduction, a loosely fugued allegro, a cantabile slow movement and a lively finale in some such binary form as suggests affinity with the dance-tunes of the suite.
The role of the sonata as an extremely important form of extended musical argument would inspire composers such as Hindemith, Prokofiev, Shostakovich to compose in sonata form, and works in traditional sonata structure continue to be composed and performed.
The piano sonatas of Scriabin would begin from standard forms of the late romantic period in music, but would progressively abandon the formal markers which were taught, and would be composed as single movement works, he is sometimes thought of as a composer on the boundary between romantic and modern practice of the sonata.

 Journal of Seventeenth-Century Music | Vol. 5 No. 1 | Review
In fact, a later date for Bononcini's sonatas is arguable because of his strict reliance on a four-movement plan (slow-fast-slow-fast) in all twelve sonatas; this strictness of procedure is anomalous for instrumental music of the late seventeenth century.
Judging from the published literature, the four-movement sonata was an eighteenth-century codification that arose from the variety of approaches used during the late seventeenth century.
His two manuscript sonatas for violoncello and continuo, however, tell a different story: example 3 shows the beginning of the third movement from one sonata, and example 4 shows the end of the first movement and beginning of the second from the other.

 The Sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti
Sonatas 31-93 were presented to the Queen in 1742, and 94-147 in 1749 - some of these almost certainly predate 1738.
The primary formal structure of almost all of the sonatas follows two pairwise symmetries: tonalities are mirrored about a central double bar, and thematic material repeats after the double bar (although not always in exactly the same order).
In addition, almost all the later sonatas are written in formal pairs, several with explicit marking that they are to be played together.

He cut the first two Sonatas in 1931 and 1933 (Biddulph 153) with huge tempo variation, not only to underline the overall structure but to emphasize the force of individual notes within individual phrases and to deemphasize the melody within the polyphonic context.

Perhaps the Sonatas and Partitas were an even earlier legacy, a master's precise instruction manual intended to provide musicians of future generations with a key of authenticity to unlock the principles and exhibit the full glory of a style that meant everything to Bach but which he feared might otherwise be forever lost.

The brief bibliographical notes to each sonata given in this edition are based on the data assembled by Georg Kinsky and published after his death by Hans Halm in 1955 as Das Werk Beethovens, and updated in 1978 in the Beiträge zur Beethoven-Bibliographie, edited by Kurt Dorfmüller.

Peter Donohoe's performances of the first three sonatas are more than welcome, then, and fill a gap; their only serious rival in the current catalogue is Paul Crossley's version of all four works.
Donohoe is a superb advocate, especially in the first two sonatas: he relishes the sprung rhythms and the veneer of bravura writing in the first and gives buoyancy to its scherzo and finale.
The third sonata is slightly less convincing, perhaps because Donohoe himself is less convinced by its qualities; it's still a fine performance, though.

Mozart: Complete Piano Sonatas (Heidi Lowy)
John McCabe suggests that part of the "problem" is that performers and connoisseurs approach Mozart's sonatas as if they were as important a facet of Mozart's oeuvre as Haydn's sonatas are to his.
Haydn's sonatas represent, along with some of the string quartets, the summit of his achievement, sustaining "his his highest level of invention and personal commitment." In contrast, McCabe views Mozart's sonatas as lighter works, "almost uniformly finely made and full of good things (with a few standing out particularly)."
In the Sonata No. 4 in E-flat major (K. 281) with its unusual Adagio first movement, Lowy emphasizes the contrast between the two main themes, playing the first with an unhurried rubato and the second more rhythmically.

It is believed that the first two sonatas of the posthumous publication were written along with those of the 1683 publication and intended to form part of the cycle (omitted, apparently, because of their unusual keys and the desire to use the "magic number" of twelve).
The other eight sonatas (of the Ten) are probably earlier compositions; at any rate, they show no new developments from the 1683 publication.
