Chinese surname - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Chinese surname, family name (Chinese: 姓; pinyin: xìng) or clan name (氏; shì), is one of the hundreds or thousands of family names that have been historically used by Han Chinese and Sinicized Chinese ethnic groups in mainland China, Taiwan, and among ethnic Chinese in overseas Chinese communities.
Surname identity and solidarity has declined markedly since the 1930s with the decline of Confucianism and later, the rise of Communism in Mainland China.
During the Cultural Revolution, surname culture was actively persecuted by the government with the destruction of ancestral temples and genealogies.

The China Experience: The origin of Chinese Surnames   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
The Chinese have had surnames long before the period of the Three Emperors and Five Kings, that is, during the time when recognition was given only to one's mother and not one's father.
The surnames originated from the name of the village in which one live or the family to which one belonged, while the clan-name derived from the name of the territory or the title granted, sometimes posthumously, by the emperor to a noble for an achievement.
It records 438 surnames of which 408 are single-word surnames and 30 were double-word surnames.

Oliver Cromwell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Another interesting feature of the Cromwell bloodline is that the mother's maiden name, as an alternative to the argument above, might have been kept as the surname for a different purpose: to disguise the male side of the family's heritage, instead of merely accentuating the female's side from Thomas Cromwell.
In 1989 Monty Python released a song entitled "Oliver Cromwell", a critical parody of Cromwell's biography.
British actor Clive Mantle portrayed Cromwell in the Doctor Who 2006 Big Finish audio play, "The Settling." The 2-hour play, starring Sylvester McCoy as The Doctor, centered around Cromwell as man and military leader during the invasions of Drogheda and Wexford in Ireland.

 writing Chinese personal names
At least five thousand surnames have been used by the Han over the course of their history; only a few hundred, however, are in wide use today.
Since the order of surname and given name in a Han peraonal name is the opposite of that used in many Western countries, Han names often generate confusion among people of other nationalities.
Names in which surname and given name are both monosyllabic are the most apt to be reversed inadvertently: an English speaker, for instance, looking at the name Fāng Yáng will probably assume that Yáng rather than Fāng is the surname.
