The "Song of Australia" was first heard at a public performance at the Oddfellows Hall, Gawler on 12 December 1859.
Three verses of the song were sung by the choir at the opening ceremonies of the new Hall 10 months later.
In South Australian and Northern Territory Lodges the first verse of the "Song of Australia" continues to be song by the brethren at the Festive Board, after the toast to Grand Lodge.

Between that timeframe, the song was used inside of Australia as a patriotic song and to announce the news from the Australian Broadcasting Commission.
The song quickly gained popularity and an amended version was sung by a choir of 10,000 at the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901.
Advance Australia Fair was adopted as the national anthem on 19 April, 1984 by a decision of the Labor government of Bob Hawke, although it required a proclamation by the Governor-General for the decision to become official.

A British colony, South Australia was established as a commercial venture by the South Australia Company through the sale of land to free settlers at £1 per acre (£247/km²).
Gawler was established by a 'special survey' for a syndicate of colonists and the town plan was devised by the colonial surveyor, William Light, the son of Francis Light who founded Penang, Malaysia.
The result was The Song of Australia, written by Caroline J Carleton to music by Carl Linger.

Researchers funded by the US Navy are studying humpback whale communications off eastern Australia in hopes of protecting the ocean giants from military sonar and other man-made noises, the project leader said Wednesday.
Noad, from the University of Queensland, told the Australian Associated Press that a key part of the study would be monitoring the "songs" of male humpbacks as they migrate back to the Southern Ocean.
"The humpbacks are famous for their songs but nobody knows for certain what their function is," he said, adding that the noises could involve mating calls or warnings by males to rivals.

In 1974 an opinion poll was conducted to decide a new anthem, the choices being "Waltzing Matilda", "Advance Australia Fair" (the eventual winner with 51% of the poll) and "Song of Australia".
The choices this time were "Waltzing Matilda" (28.3%), "Advance Australia Fair" (43.2%), "Song of Australia" (9.6%) and "God Save the Queen" (18.7%).

Australia's national broadcaster ABC has posted a MP3 copy of a song mocking Australia's tsunami response on its website, despite criticism of its lyrics.
ABC officials earlier declined to ban the song from its conventional broadcasting, saying it contained a serious message.
