Willie Nelson : Songbird - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
That said, Songbird is a collaboration of a different sort, and it most resembles -- in feel, not sound -- the work Nelson did with Daniel Lanois on Teatro: loose, relaxed, adventuresome.
Nelson wrote four tracks on this set, Adams wrote two, and the selection of covers -- "Songbird" by Christine McVie, Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter's "Stella Blue," Gram Parsons' "$1,000 Wedding," and Harlan Howard's "Yours, Love" -- is stellar.
Songbird is a late-year surprise, and a stunner from top to bottom.

It was released as the fourth single from that album on 3 February 2003 and peaked at #3 in the UK charts.
However, after Oasis' third album Be Here Now received a cold reception from music critics, Noel began to loosen his control and allowed Liam to contribute songs.

Songbird has split these albums up into literally hundreds pieces because all the tracks are by different artists.
It would be nice if it could group by album and then artist such that if you have a compilation CD with many artists, it will be displayed as "Various Artists" under the artist column and then the album name in the album column.
However, Songbird is incapable of editing the metadata on those files, so it will still be left in tact on the files.

None of the tracks on Songbird are ruined by distortion, synthesizers or any other kind of technology so many artists today rely on to create interest.
The real triumph of this album is the title track, “Songbird.” This is another cover, originally by Fleetwood Mac, which Nelson skillfully makes his own while still retaining enough of Fleetwood Mac’s classic rock sound.
“Songbird” has a sound different from any of the others on the album, but it is a great change of pace and stands out well, as a title track should.

 * Dusted Reviews - Susie Ibarra Trio *
Nothing about Songbird Suite is very sonically surprising—it’s constructed from familiar bits of out-jazz and contemporary classical music; it’s dissonant, but never gratuitously so; it’s never terribly aggressive; and none of the players ever seem too determined to make a bold statement.
It’s refreshing to hear improvisation as good as this used almost purely in the service of Ibarra’s compositions—even if it means we don’t get to hear her solo on the first track of her own record.
As the title of the CD suggests, a lot of time in Songbird Suite is spent emulating bird sounds—there are lots of repetitive, quiet, high-register phrases, so most of the record isn’t nearly as propulsive as “Azul”.

Among the album's songs was "And the Grass Won't Pay No Mind," which Elvis Presley cut for his From Memphis to Vegas/From Vegas to Memphis LP later in 1969, after which Mark Lindsay recorded it for a single that reached number 44 in 1970.
He was next heard from in the fall of 1974, when he released his first regular album for Columbia, Serenade, prefaced by the single "Longfellow Serenade," which was his biggest hit since "Song Sung Blue," peaking at number five on the Hot 100 and number one on the AC chart in November.
Diamond had been working on an album to be titled after a tune called "The American Popular Song," written by his pianist, Tom Hensley; the LP was to be a collection of covers.

Cassidys Today: Profiles of Eva Cassidy, Cardinal Edward Cassidy & Dr. Sheila Cassidy
Songbird is an anthology of cover tracks highlighting Cassidy's vocal range from jazz to blues to rock, including powerful renditions of Sting's "Field of Gold," Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready," and ending with a version of "Over the Rainbow" that will forever change your perceptions of the song.
Her talent lay in interpretation, in a mastery of emtional redefinition of a song and in finding her path to the heart of the song often missing from its original recording.
Born in 1924 in Sydney, Australia, Cardinal Edward Cassidy had a career described as "brilliant." Ordained at St. Mary's Cathedral in Sydney in 1949, by the early 1950's Cardinal Cassidy was sent to Rome to study Cannon Law at the Lateran University, and was never to return to Australia for any extended period.

Willie Nelson / Ryan Adams - Songbird (Album Review)
Though Songbird was released in Willie Nelson’s name, it truly is a collaboration between him and Ryan Adams.
In producing the album, Adams hired his backing band The Cardinals along with Ollabelle’s Glenn Patscha and longtime Nelson associate Mickey Raphael to supply the music.
Elsewhere, they ring the bittersweet beauty from the Fleetwood Mac tune that serves as the set’s title track; Gram Parsons’ $1000 Wedding is cranked to an angst-filled, country-rock roar; Nelson’s We Don’t Run is given a galloping gait; and Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah is stripped of its angelic grace and bent into a haunting overture.

CD Review: Willie Nelson's Songbird - Associated Content
Both artists are extremely talented and admired in their respective music circles, but Nelson's wisdom and eclecticism compared with Adam's brashness and (in comparison to his new partner's career) inexperience made it seem like their roles should have been reversed.
But surprise, surprise, Nelson and Adams somehow made the odd configuration work, creating an album that could help mend the gap between older fans of classic country and a youth disenfranchised from the genre by the watered down army of CMT stars.
The album's covers are varied, from a vibrant remake of Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac's "Songbird," to a haunting, country version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" given new life by Nelson's trademark off-beat vocal timing.

Musicians who routinely play a whole set without a written note can turn around and make albums where their writing dictates the flow of performance-- working in a mix of improv and composition that aims to be more refined and maybe more high-brow than free jazz.
Her second and most recent album, Songbird Suite, uses an all-star trio (plus guest Ikue Mori) to perform a set of austere and beautiful pieces.
Taborn has rarely played piano and electronics on the same album, let alone on the same song (as he does for "Flower After Flower"); this album is a great example of how expansive his palette has become.

Don had been speaking with both Blackwell and Nelson about the prospect of creating a reggae-infused country album and both men were intrigued.
Perhaps it’s not a coincidence that reggae is sometimes referred to as Jamaica’s “country music,” being that both forms have drawn similar lyrical content from everyday matters and share a foundation in spiritual and gospel music.

Slant Magazine - Music Review: Willie Nelson: Songbird
Songbird sounds like—I shit you not—a jam session between the Jayhawks and Wesley Willis.
But on Songbird, it doesn't sound like Nelson is deconstructing his lines to make them his own; it sounds like he's looking at them for the first time.
Perhaps if the record pulled back a little bit on the bombast, Songbird might have felt as breezy and light as You Don't Know Me or as punch-drunk and bouncy as Cold Roses.
