CosmicBen's Journal: My Favorite Songs   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-30)
These are by no means my picks for the greatest songs of all time; I'm avoiding the obvious hits and concentrating on some stuff that you might not know about.
Quite simply, these are the songs I keep going back to time and again, and I figured I should share them with you, the lucky reader.
Graham Nash: "Military Madness" (From Songs for Beginners)--Nash is usually labelled as a lightweight (probably because he lacks the absurd pretensions of Crosby or the seriousness of Stills), but here--as usual--his sense of melody is dead-on, and this short plea for peace is incredibly infectious.

Crosby, Stills and Nash: Fyfeopedia Music Reviews
Several songs are obviously written in the fallout of his relationship with Joni Mitchell, most obviously in ‘I Used To Be A King’, an answer to Mitchell’s ‘I Had A King’ (as well as a follow up to The Hollies ‘King Midas In Reverse’).
While he does struggle a little with the in-your-face material on Songs For Beginners, Nash is also able to pull off simple and charming material that would be banal in other hands.
Songs For Beginners is an understated record, which does make it somewhat underwhelming, but Nash’s songwriting is superb throughout and surprisingly it’s arguably the best of CSN’s initial solo releases.

 Barnes & Noble.com - Artist Bio
Their album For Certain Because reflected this prolificacy and quality, made up of all original songs, including Nash's "Clown," a far more personal song than he'd ever contributed to the group before and one that was clearly marked as a "Nash" song in style, more than a "Hollies" number.
The song failed to become a major hit, however, reaching only number 18 at home and number 51 in the U.S. Its failure pointed to a problem with the group's sound and image -- and the audience that they'd cultivated -- that would ultimately drive Nash from their ranks.
In 1974, Nash cut a second solo album, Wild Tales, which was a far more dour and downbeat record than Songs for Beginners, and got a mixed reception from critics and the public.

Amazon.com: Songs for Beginners: Music: Graham Nash   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-30)
The first six songs on the disc together with the final three tracks possess substance and are sufficiently diverse to entertain and enlighten for about 23 minutes total, or what use to amount to one lengthy album side.
You have to remember that Nash was the one who wrote the cheerful songs like "Marakesh Express" and the ones that brought a tear to your eye like "Teach Your Children." While there is really no single song as good as either of those on "Songs for Beginners," most of them are in that ballpark.
The acoustic folk song "Wounded Bird" is an entirely solo performance from Nash, with a simple 3-chord strum as the basis for another wonderful melody and a really witty lyric about what it takes to win a woman's heart.

Rolling Stone : Songs For Survivors : Review
Songs for Survivors, meant as a companion piece to Songs for Beginners -- which the sixty-year-old Nash made more than thirty years ago -- shows that his clear vocals are unchanged from the Hollies days without a loss of pitch or timbre.
The eight well-crafted originals are simultaneously introspective and optimistic, a combination that saves "Lost Another One" (a musing about how many of his contemporaries have recently died) from becoming maudlin or mournful.
The low point is "Liar's Nightmare," an eight-minute narrative set to the same folk tune as Bob Dylan's "Masters of War." It's not actually bad, it just takes up space that would be better used by three more of his country-flavored harmonica-driven originals.
