If The Hurting was mental anguish, Songs From the Big Chair marks the progression towards emotional healing, a particularly bold sort of catharsis culled from Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith's shared attraction to primal scream therapy.
The album could almost be called pseudo-conceptual, as each song holds its place and each is integral to the overall tapestry, a single-minded resolve that is easy to overlook when an album is as commercially successful as Songs From the Big Chair.

Driven by catchy, infectious synth-pop, The Hurting became a big hit in their native England, setting the stage for international stardom with their second album, 1985's Songs from the Big Chair.
While the album was a big hit, it was the end of an era instead of a new beginning.
Instead of quickly following Songs from the Big Chair with a new record, Tears for Fears labored over their new record, eventually delivering the layered, Beatlesque The Seeds of Love in 1989.

The song is probably the closest TFF have come to a political anthem and is loosely based on the evils of nuclear power.
Metaphorically, the song is about how IV drug use can lead to violence later in life (when life begins with needles and pins, it ends with swords and knives).
This song was penned in 1986 (and inspired by The Fate Of The Earth by Jonathan Schell), before the arms reduction, when such a possibility was still fresh in people's minds.

As a die-hard fan of this band, I would say that this is not a very good collection of their songs to start with, first off, this has the song "Phaorahs", which has it's own bussiness being on another CD and not really being on a "Best Of" CD.
By the time "Songs From the Big Chair" was released, it could be argued that the band moved more toward a Pop sound.
There is one song from "The Hurting", one song from "Elemental", and one B-side song that was also released on "Saturnine, Martial and Lunatic" CD- a CD devoted to rare and B side songs by Tears For Fears.

Tears For Fears were one of the world's biggest bands in the mid-80's with their brand of keyboard-driven pop.
The enormously successful 'Songs From The Big Chair' (No. 1 in the US, what Oasis would give for that!) contained unforgettably powerful gems like 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World' and 'Shout' and the lesser known but still very good 'Head Over Heels'.
However, minus points have to be deducted for some over-the-top arrangements on 'Mother's Talk', 'Broken' and 'Listen' and the somewhat unnecessary close-up of the two main band members on the album cover.

Tentative Review by The Christopher Currie: Tears For Fears - Songs From The Big Chair
Like their previous release, the lyrics were based almost entirely on "primal scream" therapy; the music, while somewhat less than "progressive", was still "art rock" in the sense of tending to ornate song designs and, on occasion, extended solos.
Songs From The Big Chair was Orzabal's "great leap forward", and is one of the few successful albums from the 1980s to have deserved its fate.
The saxophone undertones in the chorus are quite good as well (a comparison of the general sax performance to the solos suggests that Collins did a better job than Gregory; neither is bad, however).

Tears for Fears' best album, and one of the most popular albums from the 1980s, Songs From the Big Chair was re-released in the U.K. and later the United States with updated liner notes and seven bonus tracks.
Most of the bonus material, especially "Big Chair," "Empire Building," "The Marauders," "Broken Revisited," and "The Conflict," is comprised of sometimes bizarre and always experimental instrumental pieces which serve as an epilogue to the album, but don't really add much in terms of musical quality.

On this note, MoFi did a great job remastering Songs From The Big Chair, adding clarity and even reducing some of the overly bright tendencies that my original CD suffers from.
Still, this CD has many great songs and even a few that never really hit the charts, like "Listen," and added bonuses like extended mixes of "Shout" and "Everybody Wants To Rule The World." "Listen" actually isn’t bright-sounding like the other songs.
All in all, Songs From The Big Chair is another faithful MoFi release that preserves the artists’ intentions, maybe better than the original release did.
