Songs from the Last Century - George Michael - Song Listings
He's lying back, singing songs he loves, not worrying about chart success, and the end result is quite fetching, even if it isn't perfect.
The main flaw with Songs From the Last Century is that it's so smooth, it's occasionally a little sleepy, a trait that's emphasized by Michael's fairly predictable taste in covers -- "Brother Can You Spare a Dime," "My Baby Just Cares for Me," and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," among others.
Certainly, Songs From the Last Century isn't a major work; it's a way for Michael to decompress and have some fun, and the diehards who stuck with him through the turbulent '90s are likely to be charmed.

Songs from the Last Century - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Songs from the Last Century is an album of cover versions by singer George Michael and acclaimed producer Phil Ramone, released in December 1999 (see 1999 in music).
It consists mainly of old standards, plus new interpretations of more recent popular songs such as "Roxanne" (originally by The Police) and "Miss Sarajevo" (originally by U2 with Luciano Pavarotti).
This album is the only in George Michael's entire catalogue to have not reached #1 in the UK charts, peaking at #2.

Songs from the Last Century - George Michael
All of which leads one to hope that his new album of covers is intended as more than a cynical attempt to exploit the current taste for Millennium-inspired roundups of the best of the last century.
One wonders whether Michael intended the song to refer to a certain LA cop but lost his nerve in the light of recent legal proceedings.
Songs From The Last Century feels dashed off and ill-considered and it's a shame since Michael clearly loves these songs.

There is a song by the Police ("Roxanne"), but the reggae ballad is rendered in such a turgid manner, it resembles nothing so much as a lounge singer stoned on Quaaludes.

A stark, sleazy and deeply personal trawl through separation and infidelity, abortion and masturbation, 'Sweet Blue Gene' was a slowburner, something that managed to creep its way into your mind in the wee hours of the night.
With what sounds like a series of torch songs from the last century, Sheehy continued to plough the furrow of unrelieved self-loathing that was so obvious on his debut.
Although Sheehy insists "you can't really be down all the time," his songs seem to belie this sentiment.

LONDON (Reuters) - George Michael's new album "Songs from the last century" has already achieved double platinum status -- and that's before it is even been released.
Intended as a musical look through the 20th century, the songs are all arranged in a laid back, orchestral manner, more reminiscent of the 1930s than the 1990s.

One of the earliest forms of Brazilian improvised music, ‘choro’ (which means wail) has conserved its roots throughout the 100+ years of its existence, inspiring many musicians and composers of later generations.
The recording though, played with the very loud Woody Herman orchestra in the background, is anything but bossa nova-ish - it is more of a notion that US bandleaders had (at the time) that samba was some kind of rumba and that bossa was just another excuse to hit the dance floor.

SimplyFamily - Where Families Come Together
Even if it isn't enlightening, "Songs From the Last Century," co-produced by Michael and Phil Ramone, is an entertaining overhaul of standards and not-so-standards made famous by Frank Sinatra ("Wild Is the Wind"), Billie Holiday ("You've Changed"), Nina Simone ("My Baby Just Cares for Me"), Sting ("Roxane") and Bono ("Miss Sarajevo").
Ostensibly "Songs From the Last Century" is a tribute to the best music of the 1900s, however its principal purpose is to engage lovers of grandiose showmanship.
As sleekly delivered and self-consciously cool as "Songs From the Last Century" is, Michael blew the chance to do something more meaningful.

As the year and century quickly winds down to a close, thoughts of a bright, unknown future bittersweetly mix with nostalgic reflections of the past.
Like Ferry, one-time Wham poster-boy George Michael also felt the time was right to release his own jazzy reflections on the past on his new album Songs From The Last Century.
But unlike Ferry, Michael unsuccessfully revisits songs from some of the great American composers such as Johnny Mercer's "I Remember You", with an annoying harp plinking around Michael's boring falsetto voice, and a nauseating plastic-jazz version of Rodgers and Hart's "Where Or When", as well as giving uninspired, jazzy treatments to more modern rock numbers.

His last album failed to produce the great songwriting moments, but his forcible outing by the LAPD saw him salvage some persecuted minority kudos.

His album of cover versions Songs from the Last Century released in 1999 reached number 2 in the UK but generally sold poorly by his standards in the rest of the world.
In an interview with MTV, George Michael said the song was primarily intended to highlight what he saw as a lack of consultation by Tony Blair about the decision.
Michael performed the song on long-running British chart show Top of the Pops on BBC Television on March 7th, 2003, introduced by the writer and stand-up comedian (and fan of George Michael) Ben Elton.

Finchley's favourite son may have called in Sinatra's old producer to work on this album of classic covers, but the results are generally more sluggish than swinging.
As always his singing is technically excellent, but somehow he fails to cut it in comparison to the many great names who have walked this path before.
It's a brilliant song, of course - quite possibly the best of the 90s - but its unique and eerie quality could be the very reason why it's so difficult to cover.

Two years ago, Joni Mitchell released Both Sides Now, a collection of songs from the past century recast to accommodate her unmistakable voice, accompanied by a full orchestra.
It was one of the best entries in a mini-trend of albums featuring singers looking back on 20th-century songwriting (see also Bryan Ferry's As Time Goes By and George Michael's Songs From The Last Century), even though it immodestly closed with one of Mitchell's own songs.
Here, the orchestra buries "Woodstock," while other songs from Mitchell's first great run of albums lose some of their power with the pomp.
