Indian songs performed in large ceremonies   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Traditional Indian songs are steeped in the culture of the natives of North America.
These Indian songs are recognized by their uneven rhythms and lack of instrumentation other than tribal or ceremonial drums.
Indian songs often feature a distinct sound in which the voice is manipulated through the tensing of throat muscles.

Ground and Sky review - Jethro Tull - Songs From the Wood
Often referred to as a folk-rock album, Anderson points out that Songs From the Wood is really "folky window dressing in a prog-rock shop-front." Along with lyrics of the countryside, mandolins and pennywhistles, there are also 7/8 time signatures and thrumming Martin Barre guitar riffs.
The songs have a folk feel to them, but the other thing that really strikes me with this record is the bass playing.
"Songs From the Wood" begins with a very folkish vocal arrangement and the song develops into a complex piece and sounds as progressive as anything Tull has done.

Taking a leaf from the book of Steeleye Span, Songs from the Wood is bright and festive as it mines a rich, green seam of ancient British folklore for inspiration.

In terms of rustic, tights-wearing, elf-loving, flute-heavy, British/Celtic folk-tinged seventies prog-rock, ‘Songs From The Wood’ is the most Tull of all Jethro Tull albums.
‘Songs From The Wood’ strikes the perfect balance between the proggie ambition of ‘Thick As A Brick’, the storytelling style of ‘Aqualung’ and the courtly, medieval air of ‘Minstrel In The Gallery’.

JETHRO TULL Songs From The Wood reviews and MP3
SONGS FROM THE WOOD, from 1977, is one of my favourite Jethro Tull discs, and represents a brilliant return to form, after the previous year's disappointing TOO OLD TO ROCK AND ROLL.
But in the case of "Songs from the Wood", the answer is easier, they have clear folk, pastoral and progressive influences due to the fact that Ian had moved to the countryside shortly before.
“Songs from the Wood” marks a clear return to the massive folk-oriented approach that had been first assumed by Jethro Tull in their “Minstrel” album; it also marks the first Palmer’s collaboration as a full-time member: by then, Palmer decided to concentrate on complementing Evan’s keyboard duties and take a momentary rest from string arrangements.

Jethro Tull: Songs From the Wood (1977) Music Reviews - UK - Hippyland
Ian Anderson moved out to the country and was obviously fascinated with old English folk songs, and so Songs From the Wood had naturally became Tull's most medieval sounding album ever, on the league with many of Steeleye Span's albums.
You'll notice that some of the songs are more progressive than any actual traditional English folk song would ever be, like "Velvet Green" as there are length instrumental passages, various changes, and tempo changes as well, same goes for "Pibroch (Cap in Hand)", which is the longest song on the album.
Songs From the Wood just totally amazed me, and in my book, it's simply one of the best Tull albums ever, hard to believe, because it was released in 1977, when many of the other great English prog rock bands went by the wayside.

The Daily Vault Album Reviews : Songs From The Wood
While Songs From The Wood marked the beginning of a period where Jethro Tull's music was very rooted in folk, it would be wrong to simply label this record as pure folk music.
Songs From The Wood is one of the best albums that Jethro Tull has ever released, even if it remains in the permanent shadow of such musical giants as Aqualung.
For that reason alone, one could argue that Songs From The Wood is the stronger of the two.

Songs From the Wood - New York Times
The boreal forest is the continent's matchless bird nursery: some three billion individuals of nearly 300 species breed there, from trumpeter swans to delicate warblers, migrating across the entirety of the United States to return there.
Most of the wood pulp from boreal forests, for example, goes into products like tissue paper, catalogs and half the newsprint sold in the United States; Canadian logging companies are signing on to the conservation framework to avoid growing pressure from environmental groups in this country.
Tembec, a $4 billion forest products enterprise that was an original signatory for the framework, has pledged to bring all 40 million acres of its timberland into compliance with the development standards set by the international Forest Stewardship Council.

SONGS FROM THE WOOD strikes the perfect balance between the proggie ambition of THICK AS A BRICK, the storytelling style ofAQUALUNG and the courtly, mediaeval air of MINSTREL IN THE GALLERY.
Ian Anderson's song writing suggests an almost predictional message of the difficulties facing a society in which the wheels of industry and pollution have taken hold over nature and as nature struggles to fight back, it becomes clear that it faces an insidious and determined enemy.
So, unfashionable though Jethro Tull may be, "Songs from the Wood" is a brilliant catalogue of rural frolicking, from love among poppies filled with summer rain on the opening track to putting your feet up by the fire at midnight on the closer.

The interesting of "Songs From The Wood" is that recovers some of the facets of the old Tull, but it is at the same time a LP that looks toward before, as if the group is reprocessing a new concept on the one which to seat its future works.
Instruments like the lute, the whistle and -for supposition - diverse flutes, are the predominant elements in most of the topics, with a special mention for "Cup Of Wonder" and "Hunting Girl", two subtle melodic compositions of Anderson that are put to point by the encircling fraseos of the guitar of Barre.
But any description of "Songs From The Wood" would be complete without the word of the main responsible for its conception Ian Anderson.

The theme of this album is the great outdoors, specifically the woods, and all its mystery and wonder.
The classic tracks “Songs From The Wood” and “Jack-In-The-Green,” which are in concert favorites of mine, find Anderson following his muse and loving every minute of it, and it shows in his brilliantly spirited performances on literally every song on this album.
I think what is most significant about this release is that it digs down and exposes all of the band’s talents and influences all at once on one album, nothing is held back.
