Having scored three multi-platinum hits in a row, Billy Joel took a breather, releasing his first live album, Songs in the Attic, as he worked on his ambitious follow-up to Glass Houses.
Apart from "Piano Man," none of those songs had been heard by the large audience he had won with The Stranger.
With the possible exception of the Turnstiles material, every song is given a fuller, better arrangement that makes it all spring to life.

Songs in the Attic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Songs in the Attic is the first live album by Billy Joel, released in 1981.
At the time of its release, it was unique as being the first widely available appearance of music from his first album, Cold Spring Harbor from 1971.
Two songs from the album, "Everybody Loves You Now" and "She's Got a Way," were released as singles, both making the top 25.

Songs from these albums; The Stranger, 52nd Street, and the aforementioned Glass Houses became concert staples, yet Billy always included a number of his earlier songs in concert, and as the liner notes state, these songs always enjoyed a great reception.
While "Songs in the Attic" was released in the "Middle Billy Joel" (Phase 2) period, all of the music comes from "Old Billy Joel" (Phase 1).
The result was Songs in the Attic, which entertainingly offered a wide variety of tunes, from the melodrama of "Captain Jack" and "Miami 2017" to the tender "She's Got a Way." The latter became something of a standard, seeming to confirm the impulse behind this album.

Songs In The Attic was recorded during arena and club shows in June and July of 1980.
In his 1973 song "The Ballad of Billy the Kid," he describes a certain "Billy" as being from Oyster Bay, the municipality in which the hamlet of Hicksville is located.

This unusual tour served as the basis of SONGS IN THE ATTIC, a live album consisting entirely of non-hits.
The songs range from sweet, previously overlooked ballads like "She's Got a Way" (from the then-out-of-print COLD SPRING HARBOR) and "You're My Home" to early concert staples like "Miami 2017" and "Captain Jack", and make for a pretty good picture of what Joel sounded like before he became a household name.
About half the album was recorded in arenas--because, as Joel writes in the liner notes, a song like "Miami 2017" "demands the gothic reverberation of New York's Madison Square Garden"--but it's heart lies in the intimate club performances.

When Damone first formed in 2001, the quartet must have believed it was still the mid-1990s - a time when women were on top of the rock game, love songs could be both bratty and sassy, and walls of fuzzy guitars ruled the airwaves.
All 11 songs on From The Attic were written by Damone's young and brokenhearted guitarist, David Pino, in an attempt to win back his ex-girlfriend's affection.
The band's female vocalist, Noelle, adds just the right amount of feminine panache to smooth the songs' rough edges with her breathy singing style and sugar-frosted harmonies (and the subsequent gender pronoun switches).

Various artist releases are either a bunch of songs by your favorite bands that shouldn't have seen the light of day or a bunch of songs by bands you have never heard that shouldn't have seen the light of day.
This makes it less likely that the songs will be some crappy songs that didn't fit anywhere else.
As a result, Songs From an Attic is like listening to a show in which each band only gets 10 minutes to play and 3 seconds between sets to set up their equipment.

With a very loud country rock sound, Attic Lights' opening songs were over quickly as they blasted through a strong selection of tunes, all trading on sunshine lyrics and strong harmonies.
The final song of the night was darker and more melancholic than the previous tracks but it was very well delivered, with the lead guitar featuring heavily and being quite memorable.
With country music and Americana having a revival at the moment, Attic Lights have enough talent and good songs to make a name for themselves and would deserve some exposure at a time when the music industry is focusing on this genre once again.

These cuts are gimcracks from a catalog that didn't catch fire until the release of The Stranger in 1977, and Joel, very much aware that they show his development from intent greenhorn to creator of standards, plays them with self-absorbed vigor.
At his best, Billy Joel is an angry, defensive wiseacre of a songwriter, so angry about his own suburban angst that he storms with exquisite impatience from typewriter to piano, scarcely noticing the shift in keyboards as he skillfully sketches his all-American rage.
Songs in the Attic is a reprise of miniatures and night moves made by Joel on the way to tempering the best of the music he hears in his head.
