Songs of Distant Earth: Book vs. the Album
The first seedships departed from Earth in the year 2553, carrying frozen embryos plus equipment that would revive humans, animals, plants, etc. and teach them how to survive.
Even people that were born on Thalassa seem to know the history of Earth's 20th century better than their own.
The idea of meeting people that lived on Earth with those whose had no contact with Earth for a long time (their antenna was destroyed by the eruption of a volcano) is brilliant, but in my opinion not well-developed enough.

Ground and Sky review - Mike Oldfield - Songs of Distant Earth
The best parts of Songs are the occasional guitar solos and majestic keyboard parts (I'm reminded of Moby's "God Moving Over the Face of the Waters" at times), but there's just not enough here to make this album stand out.
Oldfield is not an artist who has aged gracefully in the eyes of many of his fans; between what are perceived as weak albums and and endless stream of transparent Tubular Bells-related cash-ins, he has simply worn out his welcome except among the true believers.
Songs of Distant Earth came out in the mid-90s when there wasn't a ton of hope, but the memories of the brilliant Amarok had not entirely faded.

I have conjectured that it is a photographic effect; namely when the Earth is in the photographic field, the camera's aperture has to be closed down so as not to be "blinded" by the brilliance of the Earth glow.
At Earth, the solar wind is a much more important factor than interstellar gas, but the total energy transfer to the Earth from the solar wind plasma is nearly negligible compared to the total energy transfer from sunlight.
Remember that the Earth's position is fixed at the Vernal Equinox: that's when the Sun crosses (northbound) the intersection between the celestial equator and the Ecliptic.

 The Songs of Distant Earth
The Songs of Distant Earth themselves are beautiful : some bits are a touch on the duff side, but the beginning is haunting, the "Lament for Atlantis" reprise of that main theme is beautiful in its simplicity and clarity, and "New Beginning" is a fitting termination.
The Songs Of Distant Earth is one of Mike Oldfield's most atmospheric albums, and it has a genuine affection for the subject matter.
The only flaw that i think he made was on the last song, as it is a disappointment cause the whole cd it is soo dreamy and it could just end that way, but then this last song with the wailing just tends to destroy the dreamyness for me. Otherwise brilliant.

Instead, he crafts a world where, in an attempt to save at the earth's life itself if not the actual beings on it, intricate ships containing the unborn versions of entire worlds are sent off to colonize other planets.
Though the new inhabitants of this planet built a large antenna communications antenna to report their existence to earth, it was destroyed by a volcanic eruption.

The story deals with the clash of cultures, but the best part are the flashbacks to Earth, and Clarke's highly intelligent and plausible extrapolations as regards science, politics, and societal development.
The Earth they know is a sanatized version and their world is Eden like.

THE SONGS OF DISTANT EARTH  Arth
There is great emotion in the description of the tale’s set up- the sun will go nova in about 1500 years, so humans start flinging out seedships to colonize nearby worlds.
The last centuries of earth life, and the resoluteness of the species make 1 put the book down upon occasions, yet, there is something missing- I believe a sense of awe that permeates the other ACC works I’ve read.
In The Songs Of Distant Earth the worst is already behind us as the tale opens, and its that worst which disallows the best of ACC to shine through in this novel.

It was the blatant anti-religion message that Clarke harped on rather obsessively, as well as the Harlequin-styled romantic passages that could have taken place anywhere, not just on another planet, but more likely in a preachy romance novel.
This is a very good hard sci-fi novel, about a colony of humans on a distant planet that is visited by the remnants of the human race fleeing catastrophe.
Having been seeded long long before, this colony had lost touch with the home world and developed a culture of its own, highly civilised and quite benign - they are peaceful and pursue their pleasures in an open and innocent way.

 The Arthur C Clarke Forum
This is the background to `The Songs Of Distant Earth` and tells of the ideas that inspired Arthur C Clarke to write what to many people would be one of his greatest novels.
Early in 1957, the year the Space Age opened, the phrase `These Are The Songs Of Distant Earth` popped into Arthur`s mind from nowhere.
It kept circling inside his head, as Sputnik was to go around the Earth six months later, and the only way of exorcising it was to sit down and hammer out a 12,000 word novella, which was printed next year in an American science fiction magazine.

About the music, it is usually Mike Oldfield's differentiation of rhythms or styles on a song to song basis that makes his music thought-provoking and fresh.
On this album, the same rhythm lurks through half of the songs, with only smidgens of add-on instrumentation to elevate its flow.
