		In 1993, they released Songs of Faith and Devotion, their last album as a four-piece band, one whose recording was fraught with tension and Dave Gahan’s drug addiction.
		Whenever I would put Songs of Faith and Devotion on for someone that hadn’t heard it before, their reaction is usually the same: “Dude, what’s wrong with your CD player?” “I Feel You” is a great song, but it should have been a b-side concert staple.
		Song of Faith and Devotion explores the connection between religious dogmatism and the relationship between lovers.

		At first I didn't like this album and frankly the style change and even Dave's new look confused me. Songs of Faith and Devotion grew on me and looking back 12 years, the album was amazing then and still is a solid release today.
		They had with this album, SOFAD, as it is called by the the fans, changed their image, sound and look.
		Songs like I feel you, Walking in my shoes and In your room sound like nothing they had done before and the major inclusion of guitars was a nice addition.

		Yet the odd thing about Songs of Faith and Devotion is that it sounds pretty much like a Depeche Mode album, only with some new sonic tricks courtesy of Alan Wilder and co-producer Flood.
		Martin Gore 's lyrical bent, as per the title, ponders relationships through distinctly religious imagery; while the gambit is hardly new, on songs like the centerpiece "In Your Room," the combination of personal and spiritual love blends perfectly.

		Incorporating guitars--most notably on the oddly blues-derived "I Feel You"--and other instruments into its songs was a canny move, but the stroke of genius is in Martin Gore's lyrics, which largely abandon the bleakness of the band's more recent work in favor of cautious optimism and spiritual questions.
		In an age of irony, the real surprise was that this album's title was not particularly ironic.
