Songs of Innocence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Songs of Innocence is a collection of illustrated lyrical poetry, published by William Blake in 1789.
Blake believed that innocence and experience were "the two contrary states of the human soul", and that true innocence was impossible without experience.
Songs of Innocence contains poems either written from the perspective of children or written about them.

Literary Encyclopedia: Songs of Innocence   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Of poems like “A Cradle Song” and “The Lamb”; this may well be true, in that they (and others) are written in a voice with the limpidity of childhood perception; here the “innocence” of the title is portrayed as an unequivocal and valued property of the child.
Innocence, then, is shown to us as a state to be valued, but also as one to be superseded in the gradual development of consciousness.
Innocence, then, would be the condition allied to childhood: a condition in which we can view the natural and human world without fear, and can feel confident that we have a home in that world.

 Songs of Innocence
The title page of the Songs of Innocence is dated 1789, yet it is almost certain that two or three of the lyrics in the Songs of Innocence collection (Holy Thursday' and 'The Little Boy Lost'), were written and engraved (in Blake's characteristic style, see Blake the Artist), earlier than 1789.
As a whole the poems are linked by a common portrayal of the state of "Innocence", charactertised as a pre-lapsarian state, and by the imagery of children, childish joy, and by the associations with pastoral literature and the pastoral lyric, and similarity to popular religious verse for children.
What emerges, from the Songs of Innocence as a whole is a composite portrait of Innocence in its own right, and as the counterpart to the post-lapsarian state of "Experience".

DAVID AXLEROD / SONGS OF INNOCENCE
Axlerod’s most enduring record is his 1968 solo debut, Songs of Innocence, a mind expanding musical foray into the mystical visions of 18th century English poet William Blake.
The album’s seven orchestral songs explore the idea of innocence with cinematic sweeps of darkness and transcendent rushes of light—transporting the listener on a trip across Axlerod’s jazzy, funky, filmic and rocking musical universe.
Songs of Innocence proves Oscar Wilde was right in believing that nothing succeeds like excess.

De Courson's "Songs of Innocence" is a compilation of songs that weave children's choir with orchestral arrangement - a proper symbolism of children's innocence living in an 'ordered' adult world.
Some of the songs invoke a reflective longing into your long-gone childhood, in some, you can almost feel the harshness of the environment that some children have to live in ("Barisokhanda") but yet others bring deep joy.
The songs make you realize, in whatever language and tunes that the children sing and speak, they all belong to the same family.

Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience (Dover Thrift Editions) by William Blake
Blake was by profession an engraver, and his engravings for SONGS OF INNOCENCE AND EXPERIENCE are so closely bound to the text of the poems that a photocopy edition is really the only way to enjoy the poems as they were meant.
Of the two parts, Songs of Experience is the better of the two; not only did five years give Blake's poetry just one more dash of prowess, but his topics are dealt with in a more effective and interesting manner.

1818 and in one case five months before his death in 1827--Blake prepared a few identically ordered copies of Songs of Innocence and of Experience, thus establishing the fifty-four plate sequence which has been made familiar through almost every facsimile and print edition of the Songs.
Editions of Songs of Innocence, usually distinguished by capital letters, are here referred to in lowercase (a-u), Songs of Innocence and of Experience in uppercase (A-AA), with the exception of the late, similarly sequenced copies (UWXYZAA) which are identified together as "@".
The images here began as photographs of a monochromatic, posthumous copy of Songs of Innocence and of Experience (copy b, at Harvard; previously published in facsimile by Ruthven Todd in 1947); these have been scanned, then reduced to single-bit fl+white images and edited one pixel at a time to improve legibility.

Hypertext SONGS: Introduction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
So it is easy to forget that Blake had been assembling many copies of Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience in sometimes very different combinations for thirty and twenty-five years--that, indeed, no copy of Songs of Innocence which he issued independently follows the conventional order.
The images of Songs of Innocence and of Experience here presented have been linked hypertextually, making it possible to proceed from any given poem to any other which followed it in any edition, looping through the various juxtapositions Blake created in the intratextual, echoing world of Songs.
But detailed color images make for very large files which would, at present, work against the possibility of linking rapidly through the hypertext (as it is, 28.8 and under connections will not find it fast enough).
