A commitment to songs of meaning and substance has become one of the Cochrane hallmarks, along with intelligence and a keen eye (and ear) when it comes to observing the human condition.
Reuctant to divulge the specific meanings of specific songs, Tom concedes that the album's infectious first single, "I Wonder", is a good example of the thread running through xray sierra.
In fact, the song was mixed by the team of Kolderie and Slade, the hotshot studio duo based in Boston, who've worked with such notable acts as Radiohead and Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

At school, a lifelong friend recalls, it was clear Cochrane, many of whose songs celebrate the renegade spirit and the independence of the determined outsider, was heading away from the fold.
And its standard bearer, ‘Human Race’ — a song exhorting valiant resilience against overwhelming odds, delivered with a convincing, world-weary, committed honesty — it was Cochrane’s memories of his years in the musical wilderness that inspired the lyric and his performance — is as moving and celebratory now as the day it was released.

The songs work well: underneath the white-knuckled performances and Martian textures, they seem to have a strong sense of harmonic direction, and this hidden clarity may have something to do with how their music communicates to general audiences.

'Songs Of A Circling Spirit' is a largely acoustic rendering of some of Tom Cochrane and Red Rider's best known tunes recorded on the road last year.
Given Cochrane's brand of mid west flavoured AOR all the elements are there to make a fine album but despite some tasty guitar work from Bill Bell the set tends to fall flat.
That is with the exception of 'Mystery Song' which is totally unexpected and works brilliantly.
