Forests can be found in all regions capable of sustaining tree growth, at altitudes up to the tree-line, except where natural fire frequency is too high, or where the environment has been impaired by natural processes or by human activities.

The scientific study of forests is referred to as forest ecology, while the management of forests is often referred to as forestry, often with the goal of sustainable resource extraction.

 Research
The objectives of this study are: (1) to investigate whether, within clearcuts, microclimate gradients are detectable; and (2) to test for correlations between plant species composition and microclimatic heterogeneity, to determine which aspects of the microclimate might influence vascular plant composition in the clearcut environment.
The plant species composition of forest patches in the Brussels area are inventoried in order to analyse the influence of the patch surface, patch shape and their spatial distribution in an urban environment.
In the Sonian Forest, it is not rare to meet healthy beeches near more or less degraded ones, and this under apparently identical habitat conditions (soil type, topography).

Sonian Forest - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sonian Forest or Forest of Soignes (French: Forêt de Soignes, Dutch: Zoniënwoud) is a 43 km² forest on the southeast of Brussels, Belgium, which stretches out over the three regions of Belgium, the Brussels-Capital Region (38 %), the Flemish Region (56 %) and the Walloon Region (6 %).
The forest consists mainly of European beeches and oaks.

Introduction to the Thematic Report on Forest Ecosystems in Belgium
The enlargement of the forest area in Flanders is connected to the regional strategy to combat climate change and to enhance the liveability of highly urbanised areas.
Forest reserves and shelter-forests are designated by the Flemish Government and must be primarily managed according to their special role.
The 'Management vision for Flemish public forests' was published in 2001 (ref. #1) and is a practical road map and manual for managing forests according to the principles developed by Pro Silva Flanders (close to nature management principles) with a strong emphasis on the ecosystem approach.

Forest Fragmentation and Nest Predation: Are Experiments with Japanese Quail Eggs Misleading?
If small- mouthed nest predators rarely ate bird eggs, or if they were responsible for the same proportion of nest pre- dation in all forest fragments, this underestimation of predation rates would not have much affect on the interpretation of artificial nest experiments used to compare rates of nest predation in different forest fragments.
In addition, given that the relative importance of small-mammal nest predators seems to be changed by forest fragmentation, the extent of this bias may vary across forest fragment sizes.

The Sonian Forest and the ponds in the Woluwe valley in the South-East part of Brussels are currently checked on a regular basis on their health status by taking multiple measurements in situ, which is very intensive and time consuming and for which hyperspectral remote sensing is a powerful alternative.
During this study, the differences in spectral reflectance behaviour between 405nm and 947nm (CASI) of tree canopies belonging to healthy and unhealthy areas of beech cover in the Sonian Forest were investigated.
Significant p-values were found between the population densities of 4 taxonomic groups of algae (Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, Cyanobacteria and Xanthophyta) and the reflection intensities in 12 different wavelengths of the hyperspectral data set.

Conservation In Practice - Does Shade Coffee Help or Hinder Conservation?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Finally, to keep farmers from converting more forest to shade coffee, they recommend only certifying farms that are ten or more years old.
The case against shade coffee is argued by John Rappole of the Smith-sonian Conservation and Research Center in Front Royal, Virginia; David King of the U.S. Forest Service Northeast Experiment Station at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and Jorge Vega Rivera of the Instituto Biologia in San Patricio, Mexico.
They have seen extensive areas of native forest replaced by low-diversity, multi-crop shade coffee farms during their years of fieldwork in Mexico and Central America.” I have worried for a long time that shade coffee promotion could have unintended consequences,” says Rappole.

Marine ecosystems, desert and grassland biomes, and temperate and boreal forests are virtually absent from the list of priorities generated by "hotspots," "megadiversity," and other approaches that rely on species numbers and endemism levels.
There is no doubt about the importance of humid tropical forests as immensely rich and threatened repositories of biodiversity, but their importance should not blind scientists, donor agencies, and governments to the many biodiversity values of other threatened ecosystems around the world or in a particular country.

 John of Ruysbroeck Biography,info
The controversy had a permanent effect on Ruysbroeck: his later writings bear constant reference, direct and indirect, to the 'heretical' views expressed in these times, and he always wrote in the country's native language, chiefly with a view to counteracting these writings which he viewed as heretical.
The desire for a more retired life, and possibly also the persecution which followed Ruysbroeck's attack on Bloemardinne, induced the three friends to quit Brussels in 1343 for the hermitage of Groenendaal, in the neighbouring Sonian Forest, which was made over to them by John III, Duke of Brabant.
He loved to wander and meditate in the solitude of the forest adjoining the cloister; he was accustomed to carry a tablet with him, and on this to jot down his thoughts as he felt inspired so to do.

The nest was built on the edge of the vegetation facing a clearing; the 15 nests found previously were surrounded by dense vegetation or located in the forest interior.

The Ryerson chapter of Journalists for Human Rights hosted the event titled “As long as the river flows,” which included a documentary about the Native community Grassy Narrows 80 km north of Kenora, Ont., and the blockade that was established there to prevent a logging company from using the land.
For the people of Grassy Narrows this part of the Boreal Forest is their “traditional land use area” meaning that the land supports their livelihood for fishing, trapping, hunting and gathering.
Kier Brown, a panellist at the forum and a former teacher at Sakatcheway Anishinabe High School in Kenora, Ont., called the blockade an “act of desperation.” According to Brown only two women are maintaining the blockade.
