Review - Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut // GC /// Eurogamer
More on that another time, but the point is that upon firing up Sonic Adventure DX, it would be nice to say that things have come a long way since we first played it.
Sonic Adventure was - and remains - a nice collection of proper 3D Sonic stages sandwiched between tedious adventure segments, easily identified by the sedated elevator music, the abundance of stationary, ill-fitting NPCs and straightforward puzzles.
Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut is a cash-in.

Sonic's especially are a blast, with more imaginative and sometimes crazy level designs than any one game should have.

The Armchair Empire - GameCube Reviews: Sonic Adventure DX
Sonic Adventure DX should have, could have been so much more than a straight port with a few improvements.
Sonic Adventure first appeared on the Dreamcast more than a few years back and the Director’s Cut – that’s where the DX in the title comes from – on the GameCube is marginally better but only by the narrowest of margins (and that still puts it several years behind the current crop of platformers).
This kind of thing might have been acceptable when Sonic Adventure was originally released because it was new, novel and a great to look at, but in comparison to Super Mario Sunshine (or even Vexx) it makes DX seem a poorly constructed and slap-dash effort, even with the GBA connectivity.

 Sonic Adventure DX - =SSMB=
I haven't played the original so I can't compare DX and the original, but IMHO the technical problems of DX are way exaggerated: I noticed the "frame rate from hell" for about 10 seconds at the start of the first level and that's it.
Sonic Adventure DX was a pretty nice port, but there was one major, major, major, major thing that kept it from being as enjoyable as if could've been, and it can be summed up in two words: collision detection.
Sonic should be about speed and flow - having to stop to pick up a switch and throw it at a platform ruins this.

GamingWorld X - Sonic Adventure DX Preview
The original Sonic Adventure was released on the Dreamcast more than three years ago.
Easily the highlight of the game, Sonic’s levels are filled with nostalgia-inducing loops, corkscrews and platforming, as well as the same blazing speed one expects from “the blue blur.” These play similarly to Sonic and Shadow’s levels from Sonic Adventure 2.
As in Sonic Adventure 2, Knuckles is given a radar to make the task a bit easier, but it sadly doesn’t increase the fun factor of these segments.
