G4 Forums - flame war: sonic music vs. final fantasy music
There have been some stinkers (Sonic Spinball, some of the music from SA2, etc.), but the best ones have been IMO some of the greatest songs in videogames (IceCap Zone from Sonic 3, the Sonic CD japanese soundtrack, Sonic 2).
Sonic music is good, but a lot of times, the music is more fast paced and doesn't make you feel a larger range of emotion...
sonic music is way better, it has a better melody that just gets stuck in your head.

Garage Rock - Epitonic.com: Hi Quality Free and Legal MP3 Music
Songs by many of the best '60s garage bands -- The Sonics, The Seeds, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Chocolate Watchband, The Count Five -- can be found on the legendary Nuggets compilation, the first ever retrospective of '60s underground music.
While many of the original garage bands vanished into the dustbin of history, the songs they wrote were integral to the fabric of American popular music.
The dirty, fast, incredibly raw music these bands produced was some of the most dynamic in the history of rock and roll, laying the groundwork for the birth of punk more than a decade later.

On the first track, the dead, in snow-white shrouds, are "waiting underground." "Don't Say Nothing" was written while Smith sat at the deathbed of her friend Allen Ginsberg and wondered why his passing wasn't treated as a national loss, like Victor Hugo's had been.
The second CD is an official bootleg of sorts, with live tracks and demo versions of songs and outtakes.
That Smith is self-consciously wacky and unself-consciously joyous is only one of the reasons that audiences love her.

 Hear/Say: America's College Music Magazine - Reviews - Albums - Fanmail: 2000
Led by former Plankeye member Scott Silletta and featuring the awesome and near-legendary drumming of former Lifesavers Underground and Aunt Bettys percussionist Chuck Cummings, Fanmail’s second release, 2000, packs a punk-rock punch capable of K.O.ing many lesser bands.
Indeed, the groups’s penchant for cover tunes, from the Police’s “Every Breath You Take” to this disc’s remake of the Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way,” suggests what such sappy songs could sound like in the hands of true-blue punk rock stalwarts.
Outstanding sonic pop-punk a la Green Day, Bad Religion, and even Foo Fighters once again issues forth from Tooth and Nail records — the home of good bands with bad names — this time in the form of Southern Californian quartet Fanmail.

Prindle Record Reviews - Sonic Youth
The Sonic Youth were easily one of the most innovative and influential bands of the 80's, sort of a modern-day Velvet Underground, and this album is the best reason for that legacy.
Sonic Youth is also able to write songs with more than one dynamic, which is rare for a rock band.
Sonic Youth's comments on pop culture, organized religion, politics, arena rock, street life, relationships, and child molesters, as poetic and Lou Reed-ish as they are, kinda get buried in their wash of warm fuzzy catchy guitar sound.

Amazon.com: Music: The Best of the Velvet Underground
An intense, often furious sonic explosion coupled with street-smart style and lyrics makes The Velvet Underground a band that generally provokes a love-it/hate-it response--and while this fifteen track compilation is unlikely to please established fans, it is a reasonably good point for a novice listener who has not formed a clear response.
The biggest problem with "Best of the Velvet Underground" is that it is top heavy; six out of fifteen songs are from the debut album alone.
The Velvet Underground were one of the greatest bands to emerge from the latter half of the sixties.

The Velvet Underground and Nico was their first release, in 1967, and is a milestone of rock music.

What sets (hed) pe apart is that they are by-products of a generation which has grown up being equally assaulted by the sounds of alternative rock and underground hip hop.
(hed) pe's sonic assault warps a metallic density with a nearly surreal sense of texture and invention that suggests a grand collision of Rage Against the Machine, Bad Brains, Funkadelic and The Bomb Squad-sometimes in the same song.

GET LOADED WITH THE VELVET UNDERGROUND'S LOST CLASSIC.
Held together with the soaring guitar work of Sterling Morrison and the pounding of Maureen Tucker's mallets, The Velvet Underground created a sound that would set the stage for hundreds of bands to follow from Rocket from the Tombs to Television to Sonic Youth and on and on.
Assembled together, the songs document an album that might've just done that if it had been released.
But sequenced together in the shape of a proper album, these lost songs indicate the existence of an alternate world.

Even if Shonen Knife had never become a worldwide underground sensation and buddies with bands such as Nirvana and Sonic Youth, it's clear that lead singer and guitarist Naoko Yamano would still be writing songs about Barbie dolls and hot chocolate.
Shonen Knife celebrates its groundbreaking beginnings this year by rereleasing its first four albums, beginning with 1983's ''Burning Farm." The albums, which have been long out of print, have been remastered and given bonus songs.
Beneath the surface, however, Shonen Knife's contribution to Japanese music is far greater than penning sweet punk songs with twee lyrics.

Sonic Youth : Murray Street - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Murray Street's first four songs rank among the most consistent, and consistently exciting, work in Sonic Youth's career, so much so that the album's shorter, more rock-oriented songs feel a bit anticlimactic.
Murray Street's wonderfully natural yet intricate sound is O'Rourke's most distinctive contribution to the group; while his work with Smog and Wilco pushed those groups to be more experimental and eclectic, with Sonic Youth he seems to give those tendencies focus and balance.
Freed from the trendy agendas that marred A Thousand Leaves and NYC Ghosts & Flowers, the group revisits the complex, transcendent guitar epics that made them underground rock heroes in the first place.

The Raveonettes: Chain Gang of Love - review of The Raveonettes's new album featuring That Great Love Sound
So, taking influences ranging from classics like Buddy Holly or Beach boys and modern innovators like Sonic Youth or The Jesus and Mary Chain, the first Raveonettes record, the EP Whip it on, was a very homogeneous collection of at times too similar songs, perhaps because of the limitations the duet self imposed.
Thus, as a smooth departure, the opener "Remember" is a very dreamy, idyllic tune where the two voices fuse together smoothly reaching an endurable feeling of intimacy over a guitar reminiscent of the Velvet Underground's most tranquil moments.
No hi-hat or cymbals, all songs in the same chord (b minor), no more than 3 chords per song, and no more than 3 minutes per song is the dogma created as a reaction to the overproduced mainstream music.
