Sonic Youth was one of the most unlikely success stories of underground American rock in the '80s.
Neil Young invited Sonic Youth to open for him on his arena tour for Ragged Glory, and though they failed to win over much of the rocker's audience, it represented their first major incursion into the mainstream; it also helped make Young a cult figure within the alternative circles during the '90s.
Sonic Youth again worked with Vig for 1994's Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star, which entered the U.S. charts at 34 and the U.K. charts at number ten, making it their highest-charting album ever.

Sonic Youth's accomplishments are vast and thus difficult to boil down to a single sentence, but here's a stab: SY took the abstract, often cerebral experimentalism of academic music and avant-garde jazz and made it punk.
Looking back at Sonic Youth's career, it makes sense that the group took this path; back in 1981 when they were just getting started, they were four bold, intelligent personalities jointly influenced by the avant-garde leanings of New York no wave and the aggression of hardcore punk.
Surprisingly slim by Sonic Youth standards at only seven songs, Murray Street is to the band's late '90s' output as Goo was to their late '80s output, consolidating the reflective ambient rock sprawl of recent years into tight, focused song-based pieces marked by surprisingly crisp, mellow guitar work and only occasional fireworks.

It all seemed like some bad gay porno, but when I heard that it was a Sonic Youth concert on the first night of their three sold-out shows, I had to jump back and touch myself.
For 15 minutes, Thurston and Lee were locked in a steel-cage match of blissful dissonance as they viscously pawed and mauled their instruments, scratching the pickups against their amps, detuning their strings and grinding their guitars into the ground like shovels digging in search of a groove of distortion.
