What makes Sonic Youth exceptional is that they have managed, over and over again, during the twenty-plus years of their existence, to produce unique, groundbreaking music that still manages to satisfy on baser, more primitive levels.
Sonic Youth has referred to the album’s creation as “incorporating the textures of recent (overt) avant-garde explorations into a ragingly populist framework”, and this is as good a description as any for the music contained within Murray Street.
Sonic Youth doesn’t confront any of this because they don’t need to, nor would they find it appropriate (I think) to try to make sense of any of this in their music.

Sonic Youth is an experimental music band that started in the early 1980s.
At first greatly inspired by the noise experimentation of Glenn Branca as well as the heavy acid-rock of The Stooges, they were known for using a variety of tunings for their guitars, and for applying screwdrivers under the strings to achieve microtonal drone sounds.
Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon's long-term marriage was seen by certain members of Generation X as a model of stable family life not based on either the "family values" of adherents of Ronald Reagan, nor on whatever unsuccessful things their parents had tried in the 1960s and 1970s.

First, the author criticizes Sonic Youth for changing their sound radically from what it was in 1995, and then for not changing their sound since 1986.

Sonic Youth rose triumphantly out of New York's early 80s No-Wave scene.
Originally fueled by the ripping guitar of Glenn Branca alumns Ranaldo and Moore, Sonic Youth grew into - and maintain their stature as - a rock 'n' roll aural-experimentation unit beyond compare.
Subsequent albums and tours have served to bolster the band's popularity, even when not establishing any new plateaus of creativity.

They were and still are extremely influential; not only because of the genre they helped to create and expand, but because of their attitude and their methods of operation, not to forget the fact that Kim Gordon contributed to the re-thinking of the position of women in rock.
The Sonic Youth album (only because the band always insisted it wasn't an EP) is rather tame compared to their later, more adventurous albums, but the seeds of their experimentalism, the ventures into dissonance and off-kilter guitar harmonies are already there.
Like many of their other releases, Sonic Youth can be rather self-indulgent (or boring), but it's nevertheless interesting to hear them mess around with alternate tunings and repetitive structures.

 Dirty by Sonic Youth CD
Sonic Youth's second major-label album, produced and mixed by Butch Vig and Andy Wallace (a team that had helped turn Nirvana's NEVERMIND multi-platinum) was not the barefaced bid for mainstream acceptance that surly underground souls grumbled about in the pages of fanzines.
However, the rest of the selections are SO unlistenable and just plain crappy that the album suffers for it - I think a retarded chimp on LSD could have done a better job writing some of these "songs." Brings "hit or miss" to a whole new level, but the good songs really are pretty tight.
Sonic Youth seem more concerned with "art" and "reputation" than with actually producing quality sound, but this album is the exception, and certainly their best ever.

Sonic Youth have always been Neil Young’s far-out, No Wave cousins anyhoo, and ‘Nurse’, without ever, no, not ever suggesting middle-age spread and pot roast, is an expansive study into a pop-culture in effect as a demonstrative exposition of shiny-sequinned sexual vacuity, presidential warpigs, surrealist moderninity and your fake idols, come gently.
Sonic Youth desire to conduct the oceans of sound they extricate from our surrounds as demi-neptunes with guitars as tridents pushing and pulling at the tides, drifts and channels, a reflection of the humming continuum of urban life, banality at the subway loaded with celaxa pills and starched shirts.
