  River Thames and boaty things
The original flash lock capstan used at the Hurley flash lock, prior to the first pound lock being built at this location in 1773, is the last surviving flash lock capstan in existence on the Thames and is situated next to the River in the grounds of Wittington House between Henley and Marlow.
Pound locks were also in use in Italy in the fifteenth century using portcullis type gates but Leonardo da Vinci is credited with the invention of the pound lock using mitre gates with built-in vertical sluices as he prepared plans for such a lock (San Marco Lock) on the Naviglio Interno in Milan in 1495.
Locks are closed for lunch between 13.00 and 14.00 every day except in the summer, when 'Summer Assistants' may be on duty in some of the busier locks.

Sonning Mill was one of the last flour mills on the river to be driven by water wheel.
Before the first pound lock was built here in 1773, there was probably a flash lock here, harnessing the water to aid navigation and probably power the mill’s wheel.
Sonning Lock has received a major grant from Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) which funded the installation of new automated gates.

Unexpectedly, the lock she had readied was the one on the opposite side to where we were, necessitating a dog-leg of two 90% turns right next to the fast-flowing weir.
As we approached Bell Weir lock we knew that the lock-keeper would not yet be on duty, and hoped that there was truth in the stories we had heard that the electric power is turned on for boaters to use from 7 am.
Sonning Lock also requires manual rather then electrical operation when the lock-keeper's off duty, but either this one was much easier to work than Shiplake, or I'd regained some strength since the previous evening.

 May Family: People: Daniel May (1770-1851) of Sonning
Certainly, Daniel was groomed to be a miller; and, in 1797 or soon afterward, his wealthy father appears to have purchased for him the mill at Sonning.
He was also the Sonning Lock Keeper and employed some eleven men at the mill and on an additional one hundred acres of farmland.
Daniel died at Sonning Island on 13th September 1851, aged nearly 81, and is buried on the edge of Sonning churchyard, as near to his old home as was possible.

Boveney Lock on the River Thames will undergo a massive £1.3m refurbishment, the £4.7m overhaul of Rye Fish Market Quay is nearing completion and many other smaller projects will be carried out over the winter months, thanks to the additional £15m funding from Defra allocated to the Environment Agency in March this year.
One of these projects will be at Boveney Lock, which will undergo an extensive makeover, with improvement and protection work on the head lock cut and riverbank; provision of a new head layby; protection of the island riverbank and stabilisation of the tail bullnose.
South Ferriby Lock, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, was modernised in a £200,000 overhaul.

Below Sonning Bridge I once had a problem with an aggressive swan, which was actually attacking a narrow boat steerer when I first saw it.  It soon decided I was easier game.  Jerome's heroes had problems with swans near here.

At Molesey Lock [120.3] I met a launch full of fostered children and their guardians who chatted to me and invited me to lunch onboard and took some photos of me punting in the most difficult circumstances, on silt, coming out of the lock, facing a line of oncoming boats.

 Thames Trip - Northolt to Beale Park and back
Teddington Lock appeared around the bend all of a sudden, but it was not clear which lock was in use.
The barge lock had its gates open, but there were two red lights (one for the barge lock, and the other for the launch lock).
The boat club opposite the lock had all the flags flying, apparently they were having “sail-past” to honour the commodore of the boat club.

Many of the locks were showing red boards, meaning that the water level and current were considered so high as to be a potential hazard to boats on the river.
Sonning was still a few miles and a couple of locks away, but we decided to push our luck and go for it.
We arrived at two minutes to five, and the locks are supposed to be staffed until 5pm.

Got held up for 25 minutes at Grant's Lock where BW were replacing the lock sill plate which had been damaged.
Came up the 8 locks to the summit passing a lot of boats on the way down, including Conwy and Caernarfan, so we only had to empty one lock.
Got delayed at Kings Lock (30 minutes) because of the mud boats from the dredging using the locks.

 The Thames Path - Henley-on-Thames to Tilehurst
The Thames path crosses onto a bridge round the lock here, however when I walked this part of the Thames Path it was diverted away from the river due to works on the path over the lock.
Sonning is a beautiful river-side village that is well worth spending some time to look around.
Almost immediately after leaving Sonning Lock you are passing next to the grounds of Reading Blue Coat School, which also has a small boathouse.

Starting this summer, Marsh Lock will be undergoing bank protection while Godstow and Iffley locks will have new laybys installed this autumn.
Sonning Lock will also benefit from the extra cash this autumn with new lock gates and repairs to its bullnoses.

We are the only club on the Caversham to Sonning reach which is a quiet and most attractive stretch of the river.
The senior squad will usually train six or seven times a week and their aims for the year are a top 10 place at the Schools Head of the River Race, reaching finals at the National Schools Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta qualification.

We portaged Sonning lock after about 1.5 miles and at about 2.5 miles we diverted down the St Patrick's Stream backwater returning to the Thames at Shiplake downstream of the lock.
The next portage was at Marsh lock and soon after we passed Henley and then Temple Island at the end of Henley Reach (the regatta course).
After portaging Hambledon lock it did not seem far to Hurley where we arrived just before dusk, but in time to observe some freestyling activity on the weir as we entered the lock cut.

 Nb Ramyshome, the journey so far
We were able to share more locks as we came back down the K and A, this time travelling in unison, physically and almost alphabetically, with Tina and Klim Corke on their boat Nb Strathmore.
They are very different from a canal lock not just because of the wheels in place of ratchets to open the sluice gates and the lock keepers (female at Kings) but also because their surrounds are so well tended.
The view from Lock 2 was quite panoramic or would have been if the sleet had not been blowing into our faces and the noise from the M42 just over the hedge another distraction.

You can portage, but many lock keepers will allow canoes and kayaks to lock through with launches (the Thames name for any boat fitted with an engine) but take care, the rules stipulate that launches must turn off their engines in locks.
From Sonning after passing the old three arched road bridge and Great House Hotel, a further 1.5 miles will take you to the entrance to St Patrick’s Stream, this is marked by a small bridge on your right and a notice declaring “it’s not suitable for launches”.
There is a newly built canoe portage from the weir stream across a strip of land by the lock house back to the upper level, which we only found this after we had carried our boats around the lock!
