Sonny Boy Williamson II - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Williamson's first recording session took place in 1951 for Lillian McMurray of Jackson, Mississippi's Trumpet Records (three years after the death of John Lee Williamson, which for the first time allowed some legitimacy to Miller's claim to being "the one and only Sonny Boy Williamson".) McMurray later erected Williamson's headstone, near Tutwiler, Mississippi, in 1977.
It was during Williamson's tour of the UK in the '60s that he adopted the bowler hat and carried his harmonicas on stage in a briefcase, later to become his trade mark.
Williamson was characterized by a hip-flask of whiskey, a pistol, a knife, a foul mouth, and a short temper.

PBS - American Roots Music : The Songs and the Artists - Sonny Boy Williamson
Williamson's phrasing of notes and his use of the microphone as an extension of the instrument gave his solos a rare quality, rich in innovation.
Williamson was also a competent blues singer, though he slurred his lyrics, using them only, it seemed, as a backdrop to his harp riffs.
Also known as Sonny Boy #2 to distinguish him from John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson (or Sonny Boy #1), another great blues harp stylist, Williamson was born in Mississippi, where he learned to play harmonica at an early age.

 Sonny Boy Williamson
Sonny Boy was a lay preacher, "Reverend Blue", who wandered the Delta with a brace of harps across his chest, on one occasion drawing an entire congregation out of a church.
Sonny Boy claimed that he was "an 1800s' man" and that was the evidence that he was much older than John Lee Williamson who had "stolen" his stage name "Sonny Boy Williamson" from him.
Sonny Boy was not recorded in the twenties because he was too young, in the late thirties because there was another artist named "Sonny Boy Williamson" and later because he insisted on using the other man's name on his radio show.

Yardbirds is one of the most underrated bands in rock history.
Yardbirds have often got credits for the creation of hard rock and heavy metal and also the creation of the "guitar hero" and there is indeed some truth in that.
The album "Sonny Boy Williamson and The Yardbirds" was recorded in the end of 1963 but wasn’t released until 1965 in England and 1966 in USA.

The story of the Yardbirds isn’t merely the story of three great guitarists: it may be exactly the opposite.
When the Yardbirds recorded the single "For Your Love" using mostly congas, harpsichord and upright bass, Clapton fled to John Mayall’s band and to a job that had less distractions in the center of the stage.
Jimmy Page joined the Yardbirds in their waning days and reinvigorated them, although the studio document of his version of the band, Little Games, is weak and may have precipitated the final breakup.

 The Yardbirds
Easily one of the most legendary British Invasion groups, the Yardbirds were unfortunately shorter-lived and more thoughtlessly marketed than most of their competitors (the Stones, Kinks, Who, Zombies, etc.).
But it has to be admitted that their period of major commercial success lasted little more than a year, that Clapton and Page had little to do with it, that their lead singer Keith Relf had little range, and that none of the band members developed as songwriters until it was too late.
Most of the Yardbirds' original LP's are hard to find and weren't so great anyway, and the market is flooded with deceptive, cheaply packaged compilations, all of which I strongly urge you avoid (even the Rhino Records greatest hits).

The Yardbirds are generally considered to be one of the most influential bands in rock history.
Nevertheless, the Yardbirds remain best known for extra-musical developments: the presence of three of England’s greatest rock guitarists—Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page—within the band at one time or another, and the evolution of Page’s New Yardbirds into the leading heavy metal act of the 1970s, Led Zeppelin.
The Yardbirds’ classic recordings, as well as previously unreleased live material and studio outtakes, have continued to be issued in countless retrospectives over the years.

These were the years of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, although the Yardbirds certainly deserve their share of the spotlight for their exceptional R&B and extremely gifted technique.
"The Yardbirds are perhaps best known having invented the 'rave up' (long instrumental breaks in the middle of songs that would contribute to the evolution of psychedelia) and because guitar virtuosos Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck all got their start here.
But it was Jeff Beck's stint with the band from 1965-1966 that perhaps most influenced the way guitar was played in the 1960s.
