In 1938 Sonny Terry was invited to play at Carnegie Hall for the first From Spirituals To Swing concert and later that year he recorded for the Library of Congress.
Despite their fame as "pure" folk artists, in the 1940s, Sonny and Brownie fronted a jump band combo with honking saxophone that was variously called Brownie McGhee and his Jook House Rockers or Sonny Terry and his Buckshot Five.
Terry was also in the 1947 original cast of the Broadway musical comedy Finian's Rainbow.

Sonny Terry, the best-known harmonica player from the Southeast, was born Saunders Terrell in 1911 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Terry also had a part in the 1946 Broadway production of Finian's Rainbow, which ran for over 1000 performances (Terry was paid $600 a week for his part-quite a bit of money in those days), and later in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with McGhee.
Terry was by now one the best known and most successful blues harmonica players even though the duo was considered too folky by some fl blues fans.

It sounds like typical Sonny Terry, as he works his way through original material, including standards like "John Henry" and other blues tunes like "In the Evening" (the song that would provide much of the basis for Robert Johnson's "Love in Vain").
The trademark vocal and harmonica whoops and hollers are in gear and running throughout the album, sometimes to exhilarating effect, as on the rapid "The Fox Chase (aka "Hound Dog Holler").

Nothing I know of recorded by Sonny was ever done this way and i'm so glad we have this most enjoyable blend of blues left behind by Sonny for us to dig forever.
It's a bit of shame that Sonny Terry's harmonica isn't amplified, but otherwise, this is a really strong session, the arrangements are excellent, and Sonny's voice is a powerful as ever.
