Sonoita is home to ancient dinosaur remnants discovered in 1994 an undergraduate student at the University of Arizona.
On August 10, 1867, Fort Crittenden was established on Sonoita Creek between Sonoita and Patagonia.

Sonoita Creek State Natural Area will have its grand opening Nov. 3, but until then the 7,884 acres of Arizona's first major state natural area are not open to the public.
However, Friends of Sonoita Creek, a nonprofit group that aims to protect the area, does organize hikes in the area, including a monthly full-moon trek up Overlook Trail.
From the base of the trail on Partnership Hill it's easy to see where Sonoita Creek flows — the cottonwood, willow and sycamore trees that line it form a vivid green vein through the area's otherwise dusty color palette.

We followed the directions to the Old Benson Place, a farm where we were renting a cozy cottage about three miles south of Sonoita, arriving there mid-afternoon.
When we got to the abutment, we found that the creek was nearly dry there, with no chance of any creature fishing anywhere nearby.
However, during our walk to the creek and then alongside it, we enjoyed the birding, even though it was not spectacular.
