The roots of Sons and Lovers are clearly located in Lawrence's life.
Nevertheless, Chambers was Lawrence's greatest literary supporter in his early years, and he frequently showed her drafts of what he was working on, including Sons and Lovers (she disliked her depiction, and it led to the dissolution of their relationship).
There is evidence that Lawrence was aware of Sigmund Freud's early theories on sexuality, and Sons and Lovers deeply explores and revises of one of Freud's major theories, the Oedipus complex.

He was instrumental in breaking literary sexual boundaries, but Sons and Lovers seems to suffers in accuracy from its puritanical language; while Miriam "relinquishe[s]" herself to Paul in the woods, they have intercourse for the first time in the cottage, so it is unclear exactly what "relinquish" means.

Artistopia Music - Sons and Lovers (Signet Classics (Paperback))
Sons and Lovers can be considered Lawrences autobiography, because of the events and places that were used in the book resemble much of the writer's own life.
It is a brutally frank portrayal of the relationship betweem a domineering mother and the younger (and surviving) son, a relationship that colors every aspect of the protagonist's life, from his relationship with his father to his romantic relationships with two very different women.
This bond between son and mother amounts almost to a husband and wife sort of love - without the sex - and prevents the son from ever achieving a fully satisfactory relationship with another woman because of the hold the mother has on the son's soul.

The Influence of Unidentified Characters in Sons and Lovers -- Essay at LiteratureClassics.com
Like all great novels, Sons and Lovers faithfully reproduces the human condition, an accepted essential ingredient of fiction since the time of Aristotle; and, of course, it is the style and manner in which this is achieved that distinguishes the great novelist from the mediocre.
However, as my first reading of Sons and Lovers was conditioned by early life and influences, I am unable to substantiate my hypothesis unless I first acquaint the reader through a brief outline of the determinants.
However, when reading Sons and Lovers for the first time, I can —with due modesty— say that, at that time, I was probably better read than most of my family and friends.
