SV-SO Sonsonate is a department of El Salvador in the western part of the country.
Sonsonate City was the second capital of the Federal Republic of Central America in 1834.
The department remains the heart of the Pipil culture in the country, home to several ancient traditions and to most of the few remaining Nahuatl speakers in El Salvador.

In the department of Sonsonate the flag of the department should not say Sonsonate above the coat of arms.
The City of Sonsonate (the capital) flag is the one that says Sonsonate.

The peer education activities in which the youth department is engaged, are closely co-ordinated with the anti-stigma messages from the Federation and the prevention and education messages from the UNAIDS system.
A project proposal has been drafted for intervention in two branches of Sonsonate department, targeting four rural communities in the area and implementation during late 2002 is being discussed with the SRC governance.

Initially, the department of Sonsonate had the highest rate, but by the end the department of San Salvador resulted in having the highest rate of 291 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Cabañas (231 per 100,000), La Libertad (179 per 100,000), Chalatenango (137 per 100,000) and Sonsonate (135 per 100,000).
As can be seen in Figure 6, a steady increase in the number of cases starting in week 25 is observed with a peak of 519 cases in week 35.
Departments with the highest number of cases are Tegucigalpa, Juticalpa, Comayagua with 2,369, 1,245 and 1,189 cases of dengue, respectively.

Heavy rains, landslides and flooding have necessitated the evacuation of several thousand people in the capital San Salvador and in the western department of Sonsonate and San Vicente, in the central part of the country.

A note was received from the Government (September 30, 1993) advising that the case had been in the probable cause proceeding stage ("instrucción") since 1985; no arrests had been made; the body of the victim had been identified; and witnesses had been summoned.
The latter had stalked the victim and then shot him to death as the victim was returning to his home in the Tapalhuaca district in the department of La Paz, after attending a wake for a deceased aunt.
The body was discovered in the Suncita district of Acajutia jurisdiction, in the department of Sonsonate.

On December 15, 1984, the Sonsonate court ruled that there was sufficient proof to proceed to plenario for three (3) defendants.
On April 28, 1987, the prosecutor appealed the Sonsonate court's decision to the Criminal Appellate Court for the Western Region.
The Supreme Court returned the case to the Criminal Court of First Instance in Sonsonate, which ruled that the amnesty law provided impunity from prosecution to all of the defendants in the Las Hojas case, thus dismissing all charges.

The Criminal Court of Sonsonate ruled that same day that the prosecutor had submitted sufficient proof to warrant reopening of the proceedings.
The Sonsonate Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Colonel Araujo on September 17, 1987.
On February 19, 1988, the appellate court upheld the Sonsonate court's ruling that the amnesty law provided complete protection from prosecution for all of those who participated in the las Hojas massacre.

According to the National Committee for Emergencies (COEN), 45,842 Salvadorians have been forced to abandon their homes as a result of the earthquake in 9 out of 14 departments of the country.
The department of La Libertad is the most affected in terms of deaths and injured.
There are already over 90 shelters throughout the country, some hosting thousands of people such as the El Cafetalon sports centre, which hosts 7,000 in the department of La Libertad, not far from San Salvador.

 Turning a Blind Eye: Hazardous Child Labor in El Salvador's Sugarcane Cultivation
As this report documents, the use of child labor is rampant in planting and harvesting sugarcane, meaning that child labor is an important part of El Salvador’s sugar production.  The sugar refined by El Salvador’s mills and purchased or used by other businesses is in part the product of hazardous child labor.
One such business is The Coca-Cola Company, whose local bottler purchases sugar from El Salvador’s largest mill, Central Izalco, located in the Department of Sonsonate.

Civil Defense units were directly involved in a number of massacres during the early 1980s, including the 1980 Sumpul River massacre (as noted above) and the killings of seventy Indian peasants at Las Hojas in the southwestern department of Sonsonate in February 1983.
In another set of killings, in spring 1982, Civil Defense units were responsible for the assassinations of dozens of civilians, including the murder of four mayors and eight other members of the centrist Christian Democratic Party, which Salvadoran right-wingers habitually referred to as “communist” (Associated Press June 1982).
By 1987, it was evident that these programs had largely failed, that the guerrillas could not be kept away and that a majority of people remained too afraid or distrustful of the government to participate in Civil Defense units.
