Another investigation launched on the heels of Sony BMG’s settlement with the EFF and the New York class action suit: Charlie Crist, Florida’s attorney general, announces the opening of an investigation into the surreptitious installation of Sony BMG’s DRM software.
An interesting open thread at Freedom to Tinker is developing two competing points of view: that Sony BMG got off lightly in their settlement agreement, and that the settlement is a fair and reasonably complete redress of customer grievances.
This is certainly good news for Sony BMG, as it gets them out of the New York courts without drawing a lawsuit from the state attorney general, Eliot Spitzer, who has been making threatening throat clearing noises over Sony BMG’s conduct in the case.

Sony BMG has agreed to use the banner functionality on some of its CDs to give individual notice to purchasers at the time they put the CD into their computers, as well as put notices on many artists websites and purchasing adwords giving notice more broadly.
We're still working with Sony about what these will look like, but EFF believes that taking extra steps to give people notice of the need to patch their systems, and of the settlement, is important.
Sony BMG will then send you the cash (which may take the form of a debit card) and promotional codes that you can use to download the music from one of three different services (including iTunes).

"Sony BMG is to be commended for its acknowledgment of the serious security problems caused by its XCP software, but it needs to go further to regain the public's trust," said Corynne McSherry, EFF Staff Attorney, in prepared remarks.
Sony is facing six other class action lawsuits in addition to the Texas suit, according to the EFF.
