Sony's Connect website allows subscribers to download over 300,000 songs for €0.99 cent per song, which is the same price for which songs can be downloaded from Apple's iTunes web site.
But Sony will have some catching up to do if it is to compete with Apples's iTunes, which has sold 85 million songs since it was launched in the US over 15 months ago and claims 70 percent of the legal download market.
In August, Sony is to launch the NW-HD1, which is the size of a credit card and has 20 gigabytes of memory, allowing it to hold up to 13,000 songs or 900 CD disks with a battery capacity of up to 30 hours.

Like most of the services we've reviewed, Connect allows you to burn a particular playlist onto 10 CDs, but with Connect, 5 of those have to be ATRAC CDs (the other options are audio CDs or MP3 CDs).
At press time, Sony was working toward allowing users to transfer purchased tunes from secondary PCs to portable devices but had no definite plans to extend CD burning to secondary and tertiary computers.

E Ink uses millions of tiny positively charged white and negatively charged fl microcapsules that are "printed" on plastic film atop the circuitry; depending on what type of charge is applied to a specific capsule, the white or fl particles move to the surface of the capsule to form type and images.
Sony says that the Reader's E Ink display can produce four scales of gray at a resolution of about 170 pixels per inch--more than twice the pixel density of most conventional LCDs, and on a par with the resolution of newsprint.

But when i connect it to connect player, it says there are only 8 hundred and something songs, and the rest have errors despite the fact they play ok on the walkman.
Connect does not load up, even after leaving it for over 24 hours, just for a couple hundred songs, it says building interface, this is ony a 3Ghz cpu and 1Gb ram.
We have all tried and tried with the connect software disk and cannot get it to load on any of our pc's.What are we doing wrong I have noticed there is some small problems via your pages but the man in the shop says to persevere and it'll sort itself out.

Sony is about to piss off hundreds of thousands of consumers, whitebread, Joe six-pack, average consumers who make up the majority of their customers.
Even without that sordid process, you can see that a lot of people are going to hop on Connect, get their free song, and the 2 free ones you get for signing up, and it wouldn't be much of a stretch to think they might spend $5 on a few more.
The probably polite Sony phone center rep tells the person that they should buy a Sony MP3 player, and the restrictions are right there on page 32 of the fine print.

Breaking news from ATRACLife Colloquium -- Sony has released a new lineup of harddrive and flash units, but amongst the surprise is the notice of a new software line and the discontinuance of Sonicstage.
"Connect Player" supports the new functions within Sony WALKMAN as well as providing automatic software updates and increased Codec support -- which is obviously the plethora of new ATRAC3plus bitrates that came along with the release of Sonicstage 3.2, which we covered a few weeks back.
It will be interesting to see what the future holds with this new Connect Player and all their portable devices.

Sony's attempting to market the device at a whopping $350, which is ridiculous when many, if not all of its features can be implemented in the PSP, or a PSP redesign.
For some reason, Sony believes that the number one most-wanted feature for the system is the ability to connect to a PS3, but as can be seen by our not-scientific poll, it's one of the least desirable functions, barely beating out Text Messaging.
Connect wants to provide video content to the PSP, but can't seem to find the right way to implement DRM.
