The PlayStation was launched in Japan on December 3, 1994, USA on September 9, 1995 and Europe on September 29, 1995.
Sony produced a redesigned version of the original console, called the "PS One", in a smaller (and more ergonomic) case which was introduced in September 2000.
Sony's successor to the PlayStation is the PlayStation 2, which is backward compatible with its predecessor, in the sense that it can play almost every PlayStation game.

Sony had stopped making the older PS2 model (SCPH-5000x) sometime during the summer of 2004 to let the distribution channel empty out stock of the units.
Support for original PlayStation games was also an important selling point for the PS2, letting owners of an older system upgrade to the PlayStation 2 and keep their old software, and giving new users access to older games until a larger library was developed for the new system.
Sony released a version of the Linux operating system for the PS2 in a package that also includes a keyboard, mouse, Ethernet adapter and hard disk drive.

A report from the Japanese News Agency Kyodo said that the Playstation 3 would work over superfast fiber optics connections and would be Sony's first console to run games without a digital video disc.

I’m not sure why they have decided to release a portable console but maybe they feel the pressure for the next generation of consoles and want to diversify or they just felt it was a good time to enter the market.
Whatever the reason Sony is one of the few companies that has enough behind them to take on Nintendo.
When the Sony PSP was released in Japan December 2004 I promptly imported one (and paid through the nose for it) and this review is based on 3 months of gaming on this unit.

PlayStation 1 is a success but its 2 flaws are bad graphics you can see the little squares on them and most of the games have long loading times.I still like PSX and its games but i will need to get a PS1 Memory card to save any of their games.

Sony sells a program to convert and transfer movies and pictures, but it’s only for sale on the Japanese site, and it doesn’t deal with music or game saves.
Sony’s SonicStage software will deal with your music for you…as long as you don’t mind converting them to ATRAC3.
