The Sault Locks (usually called the Soo Locks) allow (A vessel that carries passengers or freight) ships to travel between (The largest freshwater lake in the world; the deepest of the Great Lakes) Lake Superior and the lower (A group of 5 lakes in central North America) Great Lakes.
Revised shipping regulations have been designed and are currently under consideration to prevent the introduction of other non-native species to the Great Lakes (A system formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with their physical environment) ecosystem.
Poe Lock was re-built in 1968, after the (A seaway involving the Saint Lawrence River and the Great Lakes that was developed jointly by Canada and the United States; oceangoing ships can travel as far west as Lake Superior) Saint Lawrence Seaway had opened.

Water not flowing through the locks or down the St. Mary's River nearby is diverted into a canal, and the drop in head is used to generate hydroelectric power.
The lock, completed in 1968, took six years to build and is the only lock ever constructed between two operating locks.
Inspection of the locks themselves, the culverts, and galleries is done periodically to check the structural soundness of these areas.

Until the first lock and ship canal were built by the State of Michigan in 1855, it was impossible for vessels to navigate the St. Marys Rapids and enter Lake Superior.
Lock No. 3, the DAVIS, and Lock No. 4, the SABIN although available for emergency use are not presently being operated.
At that time there were so many vessels on the lakes that the Soo Locks were often hard pressed to handle all the shipping traffic.

It is the 150th anniversary of the Soo Locks, a miraculous engineering feat that forever changed Michigan and reshaped American transportation nearly 50 years before Henry Ford sold his first car.
Still, two locks, each 350 feet long, were ready to open May 31, 1855, when they were turned over to the state and designated as the State Lock.
The new lock would be the first built at the Soo since 1968, when the Poe Lock opened.

Soo Locks works as a "water elevator" to either lift or lower huge freighters and other lake vessels between the two bodies of water.
In the late 1700s a Canadian company built a lock on the Canadian side of the river, which was destroyed in the War of 1812.

When the lock was authorized as part of the Water Resources Development Act of 1986, the cost-sharing formula required a non-federal sponsor to assume 35 percent of the project cost, or about $80 million in 1986 dollars.

It is open from May to November when the locks close due to freezing.
There are commercial boat tour carriers on both sides of the locks but the rates on the Canadian side were better due to the exchange rate.
I could have done the tour again and again, especially since we had a large freighter coming through one of the locks at the same time we were going through our lock with the smaller vessels.
