Sooty falcons are uniform slate-gray falcons relieved by bright yellow legs, eye rings and cere (the fleshy base to the bill).
Their primary prey is birds, and sooty falcons delay their breeding until autumn, when they can take advantage of the vast numbers of migrants heading south through Egypt towards their African wintering grounds.

There was no further sign of the Plain Martin at Eilat's North sewage pools and in actual fact, 2 Sooty Falcons did a very good job of dispersing all the hirundines there, though a Red-rumped Swallow was new and a Pallid Swift was seen.

The most spectacular species seen there was a Sooty Falcon: it appeared suddenly flying to the pool, and after a fast descending, it flew away to a small pine forest.
After consulting the different guides that we had, we concluded different things: two of us did not see clear the Sooty Shearwater and were not sure about having seen it, and the other concluded that they were Sooty Shearwater.
When we came back to the car we realised that the water bottle that we had already bought and left at the bottom of the car had dissapeared, so someone of the kibbutz had stolen it.

Sooty Falcon Falco concolor RANGE Africa and Asia: patchy and very scattered breeding range in south-east Libya and western Egypt, on the Red Sea coast of Egypt and southern Sinai, Jordan and small areas of southern Israel.
Also breeds in parts of the Arabian Peninsula, the Makran coast of Pakistan, Sudan and Ethiopia.

As the island appears ahead of us we realise that the innumerable swift-like birds flying around the cliffs are in fact Sooty Falcons and if we are lucky, one or two Red-billed Tropicbirds may cruise out to investigate us.

On June 26, an early morning seawatch from 0530 to 0830 at Dibba saw 181 Socotra cormorants going south (had they come through the Straits of Hormuz, perhaps?), along with 11 pomarine skuas, 56 Persian shearwaters, and numerous common, lesser crested, white-cheeked, bridled and Sandwich terns.
The same day, an adult whiskered tern was at Fujairah, while at Kalba were 6 crab plovers, 75 greater sand plovers, a little egret, 300 sooty gulls and 16 Saunder's little terns.
At 1920, an early sooty falcon was taking bats at the Kalba bridge.

 Indicator Birding
It was an immature Sooty Falcon, and possibly the first record for the region!
Several doves called in the area, and we were able to track down the most interesting one and hit the jackpot as we had cracking views of a Blue-spotted Dove, which sat and called from an obvious perch.
We also had a distant and inconclusive view of the Sooty Falcon, which had been spotted the day before.

If you're very lucky you might catch a glimpse of the uncommon sooty falcon or barbary falcon.

A visit to the imposing Pyramids and the Sphinx yielded an immature Barbary Falcon.
Half a dozen Ospreys, more superb Sooty Falcons, a single and highly desired White-cheeked Tern, an immature Bridled Tern and an octet of adorable Bottlenose Dolphins stole the show here.
Because of recent attacks on tourists our bus had to join a military escorted, but not very organised convoy on the drive from Hurghada to Luxor, and this impeded some of our desert birding, although we managed to squeeze in a couple of Hooded Wheatears.
