George was born on May 28, 1660 in Hanover, Germany, and was the son of the Electress Sophia of Hanover who was a granddaughter of King James I of England.
George divorced Sophia in 1694 for committing adultery with Count von Konigsmarck[?].He had her imprisoned in the Castle of Ahlden[?], where she remained until her death in 1726.
Their daughter, Sophia Dorothea[?], would be the mother of King Frederick II of Prussia, known as Frederick the Great.

On the night of July 2, 1694, after a meeting with Sophia, he disappeared and his body was never found.
