Sophie Thompson | | Guardian Unlimited Film
Sophie Thompson seems to specialise in playing nice but not-especially-intelligent characters in films, from the gallumphing and insatiable Lydia, the second bride in Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), to the twittering, kindhearted spinster Miss Bates, mocked by Gywneth Paltrow in Emma (1996).
In that time Thompson had built a distinguished career on the stage, with starring roles for the National Theatre and RSC, before a succession of film parts in which her comic creations often stole scenes from her more prominent co-stars.
Thompson also won an Olivier award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1999.

 Sophie Thompson at Hollywood.com
She returned to stage and TV work until 1986, when she had another small role in "The Death of the Heart" and it was another five years before she resurfaced in the romantic comedy "Twenty-One", as the best friend of heroine Patsy Kensit.
Next came a Jane Austen double-header: she was delightful as the hypochondriac sister of Anne Elliott (Amanda Root) in Roger Michell's "Persuasion" (1995) and gave a brilliant performance as the endearingly annoying Miss Bates in Douglas McGrath's "Emma" (1996).
In the latter, Thompson's onscreen mother was played by her mum, Phyllida Law.

There is also a subplot involving Felicity's companion, Moxie (Sophie Thompson), and Miranda, one that is not particularly funny or believable.

Cranky Critic® Movie Reviews: Dancing At Lughnasa
Agnes (Brid Brennan) is so quiet you'd barely know she was around; Rosie (Sophie Thompson) is "simple" and in total denial that she is being courted by a married man. Christina (McCormack) is the unmarried mother of the eight year old Michael (Darrell Johnston) who, as an off-screen adult, narrates the story.
Two of the five sisters are so in the background that their identities were easy to confuse.
Streep, McCormack and Thompson's roles are all fairly clear.

The Countess is mother to a decent idiot of a son (Edward Atterton), who has brought home a self-serving Hollywood film starlet (Jeanne Tripplehorn) who drools, if not over her fiancé, then certainly over the perks of his position.
When the Countess's maid (Sophie Thompson) discovers she is the starlet's sister, the comedy of social mobility is about to explode.
Eric Styles (whose first film was "Dreaming of Joseph Lees") has kept Coward's play evenly balanced between satire and farce, and for every waspish line there is an outbreak of running around and door-slamming.
