  Urban Dictionary: sopranist
A sopranist is a male singer who sings in the soprano vocal range; a countertenor who sings higher than the typical alto range.
There is a large body of music for male soprano written when it was common to use a castrato - a voice type which, for all intents and purposes, no longer exists.
Sopranists are very rare, since most countertenors are altos.

  Sopranist
A sopranist (or sopranista) is a male classical singer with a voice-type and register equivalent to that of a female soprano.
A sopranist, also sometimes referred to as a sopranista, is a countertenor who is able to sing in the soprano vocal range, normally spanning from A3 to C6 in total physical range, though at times going much higher.
Some sopranists, like Philippe Jaroussky, are not able to reach a soprano C, which is C6 (Jaroussky can reach up to B5), but unlike tenors, sopranos are not required to produce any note to prove that they are indeed sopranos.

Male soprano & countertenor, Aris Christofellis-Listen here
His speciality is the ornamentation of the operatic music written for the castrati in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
Aris is a sopranist or 'sopranista', a countertenor who sings in the high soprano.
As the first male soprano to be heard in opera in over a hundred years, he is the originator of this voice type in the modern era; but whereas the previous operatic male sopranos were castrati, Aris is a countertenor using an exceptional falsetto.

 Sopranist . Enpsychlopedia
A countertenor is normally defined by a male singer whose falsetto is naturally stronger than the common, weak, falsetto and can be used to sing professionally without any damage to the vocal chords.
In fact, probably because early famous countertenors were altos (like Alfred Deller), it was believed for a long time that countertenors can only be altos, and later also mezzos.
The first known sopranist was Aris Christofellis, who began officially performing in the 1970's and has produced numerous recordings.

Brian Charles Rooney - ONLINE - RESUME
A Sopranist is a tenor or baritone who can also sing soprano, with the range and tonal quality that the castrati most likely had (NOT the mezzo-soprano-like tonal quality of a Countertenor; NOT Falsetto; tonal quality used to sing the role of "Lucy Brown" in the Roundabout Theatre Co.'s 2006 Broadway Revival of "The Threepenny Opera").
It shall, however, not be withheld that even the sopranists of our days are still different from a castrato and some aspects may be better represented by a woman.
Unfortunately, the recordings of his performances are not of a high quality, and it is thought that his voice was far less impressive than those of the castrati singers who once inspired the whole of Europe, but their renaissance has begun, at least a little bit.

Countertenor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A countertenor is an adult male whose voice is comparable to the female vocal ranges, alto, mezzo and Soprano (also known as a Sopranist).
This voice is achieved either by the singer's highly developed falsetto that unlike other male singers' falsetto, can be trained to sing professionally, or alternatively by possessing a natural head voice.
They are usually called sopranists, and often sing higher castrato arias.

The Aris Christofellis Voice Page. Farinelli (Carlo Broschi)
This was one major reason that a modern sopranist like Aris, whose voice is distinctly masculine in 'colour', was not chosen for the film.
The other is simply that no non-castrato singer is physically capable of performing the astonishing feats of vocal control for which many castrati, not only Farinelli, were noted.
The centre also organizes concerts and competitions of vocal music for the sopranist repertoire as well as seminars, study conventions and musicological research.
