 The Sora Rail
Fond of concealment, as all its tribe are, the Sora is rarely seen during day, although, being seminocturnal, it skulks amid the tall reeds or grasses, both by day and at night, in search of its food.
One day, you may see or hear the Soras in their favourite marshes, you may be aware of their presence in the dusk of evening; but when you return to the place early next morning, they are all gone.
Yesterday the weather was mild, to-day it is cold and raw; and no doubt the Soras were aware that a chance was at hand and secured themselves from its influence by a prompt movement under night.

 Birds - Sora
Were it not for the incessant squeaking, "like young pup-pies," that is kept up in the haunts of soras, especially at dusk, morning or evening, or at the nesting season, or when startled by a sudden noise, we should never suspect there were birds living in the marshes.
The description of the sora's habits, which are almost identical with this rail's, should be read to avoid repetition.
In plumage, however, these two birds are quite different, the yellow-breasted rail having fl upper parts streaked with brownish yellow and marked with white bars, the buff of the breast growing paler underneath, the dusky flanks barred with white, and the under coverts varied with fl, white, and rufous.

The Soras' summer home is in fresh-water marshes, where, if it were not for their notes, the reeds and grasses would long keep the secret of their presence.
In the fall they gather in the wild-rice or wild-oat (Zizania aquatica) marshes, and a well-directed stone or unusual noise may bring a series of protesting interrogative kuks or peeps from the apparently deserted reeds.
At this season "gunners" in small flat-bottomed boats are poled through the flooded meadows, and the Soras, waiting until the last moment, rise on feeble wing-a mark which few can miss.

I occasionally flushed Soras froin the dense stands of the emergent aruin (Montracha'rdia ctrborescens) on the banks of the Caroni River itself, but I did not find them among the lower emergent vegetation such as water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes) and a "morning glory" (lpomea aquatica) which were frequented by the smaller Yellow-breasted Crake (Po.rzanct ]laviventer).
The size of the wintering Sora population was estimated froin the number of birds flushed while walking transects through the marsh, from the number of spontaneous calls, and from calls elicited by exploding firecrackers.

Discussion The Sora is a common rail throughout its nesting area, its whinnying call familiar to anyone who has watched birds in a marsh.
But it is seldom seen except by birders who wait patiently beside an opening in the reeds or who wade quietly through the cattails.
The greatest threat to the Sora is the destruction of the freshwater marshes where they breed: they have consequently become scarce in heavily populated areas.
