Kismet's Sorcerer Template - Version 1.0   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Sorcerers are born with magic buried deep beneath their skin, inexorably tied to their growth and their fate, unable to be lost, forsaken, or broken, let alone explained.
Sorcerers retain the abilities of the race into which they are born and are granted the benefits of their character class.
Most interestingly, sorcerers have been seen in the forms of ghosts, liches, lycanthropes, and vampires, overthrowing ancient theories that a sorcerer’s magic is tied to the living body (or, in some theories, to the blood).

 SRD - PC Classes
As a general rule, the abilities of a multiclass character are the sum of the abilities of each of the character’s classes.
For a character whose levels are all in the same class, character level and class level are the same.
Class Features: A multiclass character gets all the class features of all his or her classes but must also suffer the consequences of the special restrictions of all his or her classes.

 Character Class: Sorcerers with Class
Sorcerers have a natural talent for casting arcane spells, thanks (some say) to the draconic blood flowing in their veins.
Whatever their origins, these characters are paradoxes, gaining great tactical flexibility from their mastery of only a limited number of spells.
When not devising swift and cruel deaths for player characters, Skip putters in his kitchen or garden (rabbits and deer are not Skip's friends) or works on repairing and improving the century-old farmhouse that he shares with his wife, Penny, and a growing menagerie of pets.

 AD&D Character Class:  Magic-User
A die roll based on the character intelligence determines what spells a character can learn; some referees require a character to make these rolls immediately upon reaching the level at which the spells may be cast, while others expect the player to make the roll for each spell when it is discovered.
Even more limiting, the character must memorize spells in order to be able to cast them, and is limited in the number and level of the spells he can know at any moment.
At this level also the character is permitted to build a stronghold and establish himself as a nobleman over a territory which he clears and defends.

The gods have abandoned all who follow this path and sorcerers are hunted constantly by clerics, bounty hunters, and assassins.
Sorcerers always suffer a -2 penalty to hit, damage, and saving throws when fighting against clerics and templars.
This is because all sorcerers have been singled out and cursed by the gods.

 Sorcerer Class Analysis
The class is slightly worse in when they get the higher level spells as well (not getting 2nd level spells until level 4, as opposed to Wizard getting them at level 3).
Sorcerers have the advantage of being able to select the spell they want to cast at the time of casting (whereas Wizards must prepare their spells ahead of time) so long as they have available spells to cast at that level (including any Metamagic spell level increases).
A successful Sorcerer will probably be one that determines a specific approach to their game play (attack, balanced, defensive, enchantment – for some examples) and then sticks to that throughout their career, carefully combining, forgetting, and picking up spells to avoid overlapping features.

Class Option: As a preferred option, barbarian characters may drop the rage abilities (rage, greater rage, etc.) and instead add the ranger's favored enemy ability and the ranger's archery combat style, improved combat style, and combat style mastery.
The standard cleric's class abilities and spells may vary, depending upon your character's religion and background choices.
All sorcerers may specialize in a school of magic, just as wizards may. Sorcerers trained at the University of Voyreem (only) may elect to become combat sorcerers.

 The class issue
The class may also tell us something about their role in the fictional society they are a member of: for example, it may imply that they are a member of a "fighter's guild", or that they can speak a "fighter's language".
Alternatively there is a class in GURPS called "characters with a STR of 12", this class determines in-game considerations (for example, they are physically stronger than characters whose class is "characters with a STR of 11"), it also has a rules system effect (they add X to STR rolls).
The first and third are not a class at all, imho: the fact that a character has 14 strength does not tell you anything about what he's going to do (a 'fighter' is going to fight, but someone who is strong is going to do...

Still, a Sorcerer is MUCH better with a bow than any Warrior could ever hope to be, so Bow is a viable option for the Sorcerer.
Sorcerers are mainly meant for projectile (bow) combat, but since his bow damage in late life sucks so much, all Sorcerers convert to the way of melee.
A Storage Character is easily recognized when within a game (always in town) because it is a Rogue who does not have a bow equipped.

The Sorcerer is the most challenging and most sophisticated character class, and has the widest assortment of attacks at his disposal.
Dexterity and vitality are not particularly useful to the high-level Sorcerer; dexterity, though related to armor class, is in large part reserved for ranged weapons and high to hit percentages, neither of which is the magic user's concern.
The Sorcerer is only as good as his spells; he must make an effort to hunt down and read as many spell books as possible, and as his mastery over his spells increases so does his potency in battle.

 Have a little class, people.
The role of the player is to portray this one character type (an intense dude who summons and binds demons at the risk of his humanity).
What I'm interested in is how the concept of a "character class" relates to the focus of the game, the role of the players and the way they intertwine.
If class served the same function as role then I'd be less growly when playing D&D. And all it would really take is to stop over-defining the functions of classes to be more in line with roles rather than specific profession types.

The magic-heavy classes tend to be the exact opposite of fighters.
A Wizard or Sorcerer character will be very weak to start, as they tend to have lower Strength and Constitution in favour of Intelligence and Dexterity, and sometimes Charisma.
This difference is only in the way the character would be written; there are no advantages to having a Sorcerer class over a Wizard class.

This usually isn't because you suddenly want to role-play a new character class or race, or a new persona, but simply because as you reach higher levels, you realize that your statistics are badly placed, or you have been training inappropriately.
While all other classes suffer diminishing returns to their attack, learning an additional spell always raises our Casting Strength the same amount, and when added to the static +3 to our CS for just aging a year, it may make sorcerers the most powerful profession at Legend level.
For example, a character with a rapier attacking a creature in full plate may suffer a large negative to their attack roll, since the rapier is unlikely to penetrate and cause damage.
