Soroti is the chief town of the Soroti District of Uganda, lying near Lake Kyoga.
It is known for the rock rising beside the town as well as a variety of Muslim mosques, Hindu temples, Sikh gurdwaras as well as the countless churches that meet in various buildings in the town varying from the drab Anglican Cathedral to small Pentecostal congregations in school classrooms.
Any visit to Soroti is not complete without a stroll round the stalls of fresh fruit and vegetables, dry goods and the local fish.

Part of Kakungulu’s team camped near Soroti Rock where they forced the locals to clear the land and within a few years a large area had been cleared and considerable amount of settlement had taken place.
Generally, it is a young population with the 0.4 age group (infants) forming 16 percent, 5-14 age group (children) constituting 28 percent 15-64 age group (economically active) forming 52 percent and 65+ (the aged) constituting 3.9 percent.
Soroti district mainly comprises of Iteso and Kumam who speak Ateso and Kumam respectively and are Nile-Hamites.

 At Least 82 abducted Ugandan Schoolgirls Found
Otekat said the army was still looking for the rest of the girls, who were abducted on Tuesday by Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels.
Otekat said that the rebels had on Wednesday morning also ambushed a vehicle heading for Soroti from Katakwi district and wounded five occupants, who were all admitted at Soroti hospital.
Heavy gunfire was heard again in Soroti town overnight on Wednesday and a Catholic priest, who asked not to be named, said the LRA rebels had tried to stage another attack on the town.

In the past several months, the fighting has been much more violent and has spread to new areas of the country, particularly the northern towns of Soroti, Gulu, and Lira.
With arrivals flooding in, no preparations had been made to properly receive the displaced, and people were stricken with measles and malnutrition.
Today, many people are now leaving Soroti for neighboring camps that offer more security, but these sites are not prepared to receive them and lack shelters, latrines, food distribution and access to health care.

On the afternoon of Sunday, June 22, police raided the offices of the Soroti Catholic Diocese Integrated Development Organization, where the station is located, and stopped all radio broadcasts.
Sources in Soroti said that at a June 17 security meeting in Soroti, Ugandan minister of state for refugees and disaster preparedness Christine Amongin Aporu directed all radio stations in the area to stop airing news or talk shows about the LRA attacks.
