Soroti is the main commercial and administrative centre of Soroti District in Uganda, lying near Lake Kyoga.
It is known for the rock formation near the town as well as a variety of Muslim mosques, Hindu temples, Sikh gurdwaras as well as several churches that meet in various buildings in the town varying from the drab Anglican cathedrals to small Pentecostal congregations in school classrooms.
Soroti Airport was originally built as a training school for the British Overseas Airways Corporation to train their pilots in tropical flying techniques.

A WFP June 2003 assessment of Katakwi District (the assessment was not completed due to LRA incursions into the district) revealed that between 40 to 50 percent of the population in the camps have limited or no assets and are only able to meet 70 percent of their daily recommended consumption needs.
However, district officials are worried that the early onset of dry conditions in June may end up reducing banana productivity and reproduction and will cause early ripening of the crop in the coming months, especially if the second rains do not begin on time in August when they are expected.
District officials, UN agencies and non-government organizations (NGOs) estimate that only a small proportion of the population in the three districts has been able to access cultivable land and that no significant harvests are expected, increasing future requirements for food assistance.

Katakwi district, which is located in north-eastern Uganda, regained its district status in 1997 through an Act of Parliament.
Katakwi borders Moroto in the east and north, Lira in the northwest, Soroti in the southwest and Kumi in the south.
The district has a population of 300,012 out of which 145,081 (48.4 percent) are male and 154,931 (51.6 percent) are female.

Risky food security is reported in some areas of districts to the east of Lake Kyoga, and northern and northeastern Uganda due to low stocks and or civil insecurity that restricts populations’ access to fields to harvest.
An assessment to ascertain the extent of the problem and verify food condition in the districts with a view to deriving consensus and informing policy is planned in Katakwi, Kumi, Pallisa, Soroti, and Tororo Districts between September 16-21, with a later assessment of Kotido, Moroto, and Nakapiripirit planned for October as security permits.
In Mbarara District, dry conditions there since mid-2002 reduced water and vegetation availability, causing many pastoralists to move their livestock into Lake Mburo National Park, with permission of the park authorities, where they are able to access water and pastures.

Soroti MDO serves rural families of the Iteso tribe living in Soroti district and parts of Kaberamaido and Katakwi districts.
The Soroti MDO was established in 1993 to deal with the aftereffects of the Teso insurgency, which badly affected the region.

In 2000, the authorities in Soroti district, southern Uganda, launched a control programme, dosing cattle with long-acting drugs to kill the parasite, after tests showed that as much as 18 percent of local herds were carrying the parasite.
But the latest study, based on blood tests carried out in the area in April 2004, shows that the main parasite strain is present in 22 percent of local cattle — and similar infection rates occur among cattle in three villages just outside the intervention area.
Fevre blames livestock movements, abetted by instability in southern Uganda, as the cause for the failure in Soroti.
