The Neuros uses a database that is built by synchronization software to provide quick access to all the information stored in the tags of your songs.
NSM is available from http://neurosaudio.com, NDBM is available from http://neurosdbm.sourceforge.net, Sorune is available from http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sorune, and Positron is availiable at http://www.xiph.org/positron/.
The creation of multiple synchronization managers was simplified by the release of the database format as well as the source code to the original synchronization manager, NSM.

The strange thing is the free space indicator does not change when I use the reset function in sorune, even though it does clear any files/directories that I had created using the usb mass storage interface.
I would like to help figure out why sorune did not see any free space, but I don't know what file you are referring to when asking to post the Neuros df -Pk and mount lines.
I currently have OSX 10.4.2 and am unable to get Sorune to start up and I was not sure if there was something that I was neglecting or if it was just unable to work.

sorune does not keep a local copy of any of the metadata about the user's audio library on the host machine.
The Neuros database is manipulated directly, which eliminates the need to identify each Neorus backpack that is connected to the host machine.
--export filename Exports the Sorune database to filename.

I'm switiching to a new host at the moment (notice there is no banner at the top of this page) and so some of the links might not be fully working at the moment, but should come online again soon.
So, since its around Christmas, or Chanukah, or Kwanzaa, and "A Festivus for the rest of us!", I decided it was worth it to give thanks and get a new URL.

Instead of using tags, you can tell Sorune how your directory structure is laid out and it will build the database from that layout.
This is nice for soundtracks as a single soundtrack is typically made up of many artists.
Sorune support for this requires that the artist tag be "Various" and the title tag be "Title (Artist)".

After Sorune added the new files to the database, it also copied the files to a new sub-directory it created -- 'MUSIC/MUSIC' and I don't know why.
I used Winamp to create my playlists, and all of the files on the playlists are appearing in the new sub-directory when I tell Sorune to add the playlists to the database.
What Sorune needs is an "Add to database" function, and a reworked "Add to Neuros" function.

Or you can use the open-source Sorune sync manager, at http://sorune.tk/ Sorune is written in Perl, and provides more permuted databases such as genre under album and genre under artist.
I am going to add an audioscrobbler interface to Sorune so I can keep track of what I've been playing on the Neuros, but I first need the Neuros to keep track of it.
If the gcc backend for the TI processor were working, I'd do it myself; but this is simple enough that someone with access to the.NET development tools and with everything all set up can probably get it done in a few minutes.

Ok, first note to the guys at Sorune: registration at your forums is not working, because the forum complains about some spamcop.net refusal when it tries to send the confirmation email.
Now, what I'd really like to see is this support formalized and integrated into Sorune so audioscrobbler will be updated whenever you sync.
I've contacted the OP and he's agreed to modify his firmware patch slightly and I've agreed to incorporate the audioscrobbler support into Sorune.

I've already invested in a Neuros, which has some neat features that iPod doesn't, including the ability to make recordings.
sorune and ndbm have modest command line capabilities, but automated syncing looks like a lot of custom hacking while the iPod people have already figured it out.
I don't have much interest in buying only-runs-on-Apple music files from the iTunes store.

It is necessary to have the Java runtimes installed on your computer to use it.
There is also Sorune, which has a very small footprint, and can run right off the Neuros hard drive itself.
It worked well, but it has a very unpolished GUI, and a work-in-progress feel to it.
