An impact crater (impact basin, astrobleme or sometimes crater) is a circular or oval depression on a surface, usually referring to a planet, moon, asteroid, or other celestial body, caused by a collision of a smaller body (meteor) with the surface.
Ancient craters whose relief has disappeared leaving only a "ghost" of a crater are known as palimpsests.
Few underwater craters have been discovered because of the difficulty of surveying the sea floor; the rapid rate of change of the ocean bottom; and the subduction of the ocean floor into the Earth's interior by processes of plate tectonics.

As the number of impact craters increases on a surface, the appearance of the surfaces changes; this can be used to establish the age of extraterrestrial terrain.
Current estimates of the rate of cratering on the Earth suggest that from one to three craters with a width greater than 20 kilometers are created every million years.
In either case, the size of the crater depends on the size of the impactor and the material in the impact regions.

Sosigenes is a lunar impact crater on the west edge of Mare Tranquillitatis.
The crater rim has a high albedo, making it relatively bright.
By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater mid-point that is closest to Sosigenes crater.

It is a happy fact of crater formation that the distance of ejecta from a crater is related to the depth from which it was hauled by the impact, with the deepest material being deposited on the rim.
