Tawaraya Sotatsu Biography | Encyclopedia of World Biography
The few other references to Sotatsu suggest that he was part of a circle of influential Kyoto tea masters and esthetes and that he collaborated at various times with the famous calligrapher and lacquer artist Koetsu, who was related to him by marriage.
Not only is Sotatsu's subject matter typically Japanese, but his style is too, for he used bright colors and gold leaf applied in flat areas, thus achieving abstract, decorative patterns of great beauty and sensitivity.
Although Sotatsu's fame rests primarily on these screens and horizontal hand scrolls, he also painted numerous smaller pictures in the form of fans, album leaves, and hanging scrolls, some of the scrolls being in monochrome rather than color.

The four Sotatsu school paintings in the exhibition were originally from a set of twelve mounted as a pair of six panel screens.
Sotatsu was the proprietor of a shop in Kyoto called the Tawaraya, which is believed to have produced painted fans, lantern paper, shikishi (decorated square paper for paintings or calligraphy), and tanzaku (decorated paper strips).
Sotatsu is regarded as the founder of the famous Rinpa style of decorative arts, although the genre is somewhat misleadingly named after a later master artist Korin (Rin-pa: school of Rin).

It is generally accepted that Sotatsu‘s career started around the end of the sixteenth century when he began to work with Hon’ami Koetsu (1558-1637), his cousin by marriage.
After about 1602 Sotatsu moved away from small-scale designs on paper and began his career as an independent painter and was the first member of the merchant class to be awarded the honorary title of Hokkyo at around 1620.
Sotatsu’s death is not recorded, but he is thought to have passed away around the year 1640.

ASIA SOCIETY: THE COLLECTION IN CONTEXT
The Rinpa ancestry is traced back to the painter and calligrapher Tawaraya Sotatsu (active 1600-1640) and Hon'ami Koetsu (1558-1637), best known for his calligraphy and pottery.
Sotatsu, Koetsu, and Korin belonged to the machishu class of Kyoto society, wealthy, educated merchants who socialized with and catered to the Kyoto aristocracy, many of whom were impoverished.
The interest in reviving early court culture that permeates the art of the Rinpa school is a reflection of the close cultural and personal ties between the machishu and the aristocracy.

Rinpa means "rin school"; the term is derived from the last syllable of the name Korin in honorof Ogata Korin (1658-1716), one of the most influential artists of this school.
Although Tawaraya is the surname most commonly given to this artist, it is possible that his family name was either Kitagawa or Nonomura, names found among the lists of his followers.
It has traditionally been accepted that around 1602 Sotatsu worked on the restoration of the 1164 Lotus Sutra dedicated by the Taira family and owned by the Itsukushima Shrine, the Heiki nokyo, now classified as a National Treasure.

While most screens in the Freer collection are in their original format, some paintings were actually created for placement on sliding door panels.

Sotatsu probably worked with Koetsu until 1615, when the latter retired to Takagamine north of Kyoto.
During this period Sotatsu seems to have produced mainly smaller objects such as fans, poem cards (shikishi) and handscrolls with decoration rendered in gold, silver and colour.
1620 Sotatsu began to receive larger commissions, including screen-and-wall paintings, and, in the 1630s, large folding screens decorated with classical themes.
