Strat's Place - Daniel Rogov - Losing Battles - Winning Friends
In fact, in a career that lasted more than forty years, it is estimated that 16,000 soldiers and officers in his command died in combat and that he lost more than 800 artillery pieces, 2,600 horses, 240 donkeys and 6 camels to the enemy.
Soubise was the last male in his family, so upon his death theamily line and title faded into oblivion.
Despite this, the family name lives on, because one of his chefs devised the mixture known as "Soubise", a mixture so useful that in addition to being used as a garnish to many dishes it is also used in making more than 35 different sauces.

Benjamin de Rohan, duc de Soubise - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Soubise's chief exploit was a singularly bold and well-conducted attack (in 1625) on the Royalist fleet in the river Blavet (which included the cutting of a boom in the face of superior numbers) and the occupation of Oleron.
According to his brother, the failure of the defence and of the English attack on Île de Ré was mainly due to the alternate obstinacy of the townsfolk and the English commanders in refusing to listen to Soubise's advice.
The Soubise title afterwards served as the chief second designation (not for heirs apparent, but for the chief collateral branch for the time being) of the house of Rohan-Chabot.

Battle of Vellinghausen - Seven Years War
In early July 1761 the two French armies of Prince Soubise and the Duc de Broglie united with the aim of forcing Ferdinand’ army to cross the River Lippe and abandon the important town of Lippstadt.
The agreement between them was that Broglie would attack the allied forces that lay between the Ahse and the Lippe Rivers, while Soubise moved against Ferdinand’s troops on the French left, behind Werle, and envelope their unsecured right wing.
But Soubise contented himself with sending a small force out to the left and making a limited assault on the village of Scheidingen, while most of his army remained inactive.
