Souda is 6.5 km to the east of central Chania, although the area in between is mostly built-up.

Souda Bay is located on the north coast of Crete.
A fuel pier is located on the north side of Souda Bay approximately 3 1/2 nautical miles east of the main portion of the port.
A second anchorage, referred to as the inner bay anchorage is located in Souda Bay approximately 1.9 n mi east of the Naval Base in depths of 390-490 ft. This anchorage is used by aircraft-carrier sized vessels for liberty visits.

The bay is overlooked on both sides by hills, with a relatively low and narrow isthmus in the west near Chania.
Near the mouth of Souda bay, between the Akrotiri and the town of Kalives, are a set of small islands with Venetian fortifications.

The Navy’s Coastal Warfare Detachment in Souda Bay is comprised of Reserve units deployed from Newport, Rhode Island.
SOUDA BAY, Crete (NNS) -- Recent events have heightened the need for military force protection and in order to meet higher security needs, members of the U.S. Naval Reserve force have been recalled to active duty.
Members of the units are primarily homeported in Newport, R.I. and are attached to NCW, Group 2, from Williamsburg, VA. Others are either attached to U.S. Naval Support Activity 0197, Souda Bay, Crete, Greece, homeported in Brunswick, Maine or cross-assigned from several units in various states.

It is a quiet, peaceful spot and is immaculately kept, the cemetery proper bounded by trees and shrubs on three sides and the open sea of the bay in front.
It is the last resting place of 1527 of the known 2000 British Commonwealth war dead, the majority of whom who lost their lives in the Battle for Crete between May 20th and 31st, 1941.
Although Souda Bay is a port - a Naval Base which is now home, in addition to the civilian ferries, to Greek warships - it is not readily apparent when visiting this spot how few sailors there are interred here.

The U.S. Naval Support Activity (NSA) Souda Bay is located on the Hellenic (Greek) Air Force Base by the village of Mouzouras, 17 kilometers (approximately 10 miles) east of the city of Hania.
NSA occupies an area of approximately 110 acres on the North side of the air base, which is home of the Hellenic Air Force's 115th Combat Wing flying A-7 aircraft.
A Hellenic Naval Base occupies a large portion of both the North and the South coast of Souda Bay along with the port village of Souda.

Having escaped Crete John was in due course posted to the Suez Canal where he spent a number of months defending the Canal from enemy attack before retuning to England on compassionate leave after the death of his father.
Finally John and son Roger were able to drive much of the route the veteran took in May 1941 when he walked from Souda Bay to Chora Sfakion to make his escape.

The path starts where a stream enters the sea at the far west end of Souda Bay.
This can be reached by scrambling up a steep ledge in the limestone that slopes up from the mouth of the stream but an easier path is hidden by the vegetation just inland of this rocky outcrop, and zigzags up to the top.
You can continue westward on this road, now surfaced in part, which follows the sea closely round a number of sandy bays until the next headland is reached one kilometre further on.
