Soul Coughing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
De Gli Antoni, Doughty, Boston-based upright bass player Sebastian Steinberg, and Israeli drummer Yuval Gabay (a collaborator with Zorn, and David Linton) played their first gig, as "M. Doughty's Soul Coughing," at the Knitting Factory on June 15, 1992, a late-Monday night slot that Doughty cadged from his boss because nobody else wanted it.
In 1993, he founded a club night called "SLAW" at CBGB's 313 Gallery, which was meant to emulate the popular jazz-hiphop club Giant Step, but eventually became simply a showcase for Soul Coughing.
Posters for SLAW were headlined "Deep Slacker Jazz," (a phrase meant to parody The Who slogan "Maximum RandB") which became an enduring description of the band's sound.

Soul Coughing's newest release, "El Oso," sticks to this formula to a tee, and proves that many molds of music can be blended to form a more successful enterprise.
Soul Coughing was an unheard of band until their hit single "Super Bon Bon" appeared on "Irresistible Bliss" in 1996, and that only gave them limited attention among the masses.
Soul Coughing may very well pass over the brink of truly alternative music, and become the next big thing without sacrificing any of their musical integrity, a fantasy held by many musicians.

Soul Coughing : Lust in Phaze: The Best of Soul Coughing - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Few bands are as criminally overlooked as Soul Coughing, but in their short career they managed to craft some brilliantly fractured pop that went sadly unnoticed by mainstream listeners.
Paving the way for like-minded bands like Cake and the Bloodhound Gang, Soul Coughing was the beat poetry antidote to the heavy-handed grunge that was clogging the airwaves when they first arrived in 1994.
But to anyone looking to discover the sound of Soul Coughing, there is no better source than Lust in Phaze, an album that manages to capture the band's hipster charm and cool soundscapes while also featuring the variety of material they were capable of.

Splendid Magazine reviews Soul Coughing: New York, NY 16.08.99
Soul Coughing caught the caboose of the "alternative rock" train, garnering a modest amount of mainstream recognition -- even if you're not a SC fan, a few of 16.08.99's tracks ("Circles", "Super Bon Bon") might sound familiar if you happen to be of a certain age.
Soul Coughing's electronic ingredients may have turned more than a few heads (be sure to check out Mark De Gli Antoni's employment of vocal samples on "Miss the Girl" and "Janine"), but they were all about the rhythm section.
Soul Coughing virgins might still want to start out with one of their studio releases, but fans won't be disappointed.

 Soul Coughing live at Universalbuzz.com!!!
Soul Coughing brought together the tastiest brains on NYC’s ultra underground avant jazz/hip hop scene in 1993.
Taking a cue from as different influences as Public Enemy, De La Soul and John Zorn, their approach to hip hop is to take a hammer to it, then glue, nail and spit-stick the whole thing back together with snippets of found noise, obscurist references and the worship of percussion.
Displeased with the results, the band toured, but their hearts and mighty brains were simply not in it and they decided they had become just another rock band, something the four had never been interested in.

Refreshingly, the drum 'n bass fits perfectly with Soul Coughing's music and brings new life to the band by helping them sound less like a neo-beatnik poet backed up by a tight acid jazz quartet (essentially what the band is anyway).
The place where the familiar Soul sound and the driving force that is drum 'n bass meet and damn near collide is on the brilliant, pulsating track "The Incumbent," Doughty's love-hate ode to fast-paced New York life.
Soul Coughing comes off most pleasing when they venture into new atmospheres with their sound.

Soul Coughing: New York, NY 16.08.99 - PopMatters Music Review
Soul Coughing is rightly remembered as one of the more idiosyncratic and enduring bands of the '90s.
Soul Coughing's unique, jazz-inflected sound was built around their rhythm section, and as you might expect from this they are exceedingly tight in a live context.
It may be a shame that they didn't stick around longer, but considering how many bands stay on the shelf for far longer than their expiration dates, the fact that they came together for just long enough to release a handful of discs without compromising their quality is pretty astounding.

A prime example of music, art and commerce merging successfully--both commercially and sonically--Soul Coughing emerged out of the New York avant art scene with a refreshing sound uniquely created from the blending of phat hip-hop beats, lazy jazz, wide-open rock and crazy samples manipulated through a keyboard computer contraption.
Many relationships that begin in dark clubs don't work out; that wasn't the case for Soul Coughing when, in 1992, they hooked up at NYC's Knitting Factory, a club where vocalist/guitarist M. Doughty stood guard over the door.

Soul Coughing burst onto the scene with an eclectic hybrid of heavy, in-the-pocket drumming, fat, slinky basslines, guitars that lend accents and wiry phrases, keyboards, loops sampling everything from seagulls to Raymond Scott, and--through it all--associative, poetic lyrics sung or rapped in the distinctive, nerdy whine of frontman M. Doughty.
From "Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago?" to "Uh, Zoom, Zip," Soul Coughing mix it up with loose, kinetic energy and a keen sense of experimentation.
